The coaster rotterdam: wonderful sleep in the heart of Rotterdam on a historic ship from 1909!
Our daughter Sophie had earned her swimming certificate A-B-C and we wanted to celebrate. She thought it would be fun to sleep on a boat for once and so we ended up at De Coaster Rotterdam in Rotterdam. We also mentioned this accommodation in our blog about Rotterdam with kids. Herewith our review about our overnight stay on this ship right in the center of Rotterdam!

The 1909 historic ship
On the Coaster Rotterdam it is possible to book three different rooms: Popeye’s Cabin is in the front part of the ship, Olive’s Cabin is in the middle part of the ship and Captain’s Cabin is in the rear part. The first 2 Cabins offer two rooms with 1 double bed and 1 sofa bed for 2 people. This makes these two rooms suitable for parents with two kids. It is also possible, for example, to rent two cabins and then open the doors connecting the cabins. So you can even stay at The Coaster with a family of 10. Each Cabin has its own kitchen and bathroom and when the weather is nice, it is possible to sunbathe on the terraces on the deck of the ship.
The hotel is really super central. We walked to the Market Hall in Rotterdam in a few minutes. Parking is also very easy. We paid just over 10 euros for almost 24 hours through Parkbee for the Wijnstraat 78 parking garage. This parking garage is about a three-minute walk from the boat.
In addition, it is possible to sail the electric dinghy called Walli with four people in the harbor. We did not do this, but we can imagine that especially in the summer this is a very fun activity to do with your kids.
We slept in Popeye’s Cabin. This is a spacious cabin for four people. What we found a great advantage is that the master bedroom for the parents is separated from the living room, giving you privacy as parents.
In addition, there is a living room with a kitchen. In this regard, there is enough space to eat with the family or play a game, for example. WIFI is also available in the cabin and it is possible to enjoy watching TV with the family.
The kitchen is basically fully equipped. There is also a coffee maker in the room to start the day with a cup of coffee.
For a good impression of the cabin, watch the video below. If you want to book one of the cabins check out the owner’s website here.
The Jacuzzi on the boat
One of the special things an overnight stay on De Coaster in Rotterdam offers is the jacuzzi on the deck. This one is suitable for families of five and overlooks the water. To create more privacy, it is possible to place screens in front of the Jacuzzi so that people from the street side do not look into the lovely hot tub. You can set the temperature of the water and bubbles yourself and it does give a very luxurious feeling when you sit with the family in this warm bath on your own ship. We loved the addition to our overnight stay on this ship!
Food and drink on the boat
Basically, no meals are included with the stay on the boat, but they can be booked in addition. Thus, for your breakfast you can go for a fee to the restaurant of hotel Ibis which is the ship’s neighbor.
It is also possible to order a lunch set for lunch. Yet this is basically unnecessary due to the central location of the boat. We had delicious Indian food in the evening at Rotterdam’s market hall which is a few minutes’ walk from the boat. In addition, several restaurants are located around the boat.
For breakfast, we walked to the Albert Heyn in the market hall and had a delicious breakfast at the cabin’s dining table. The cabin itself also has a kitchen, giving you the opportunity to cook for yourself as well. There is also a large refrigerator in the kitchen to make sure you always have cold drinks on hand.
Another option is to sleep in a wrap-around boat. These are a short distance from the boat and belong to the same owner. Wrap boats are so named because the top of the boat is wrapped in 24 layers of cardboard, making the boat light, but also very well insulated in terms of noise and temperature. These tinyboats are sustainably furnished and can be booked for families of up to four people.

We thought it was a very successful overnight stay in Popeye’s Cabin on the Coaster Rotterdam! We really had wonderful quality time with the family! Playing a game together, eating and chilling in the jacuzzi and all within walking distance of downtown Rotterdam! We were there in the winter now, but we can imagine that in the summer, the ship’s sun deck is also a good place to be.
