Van der Valk Sassenheim – Leiden with kids: family-friendly hotel!
Last weekend, we once again visited the family-friendly city of Leiden. We have visited the city before and wrote about the city the blog Leiden with kids, in which we listed all the fun kids’ activities in Leiden. During this city trip we stayed at the van der Valk Hotel Leiden and as a result of this overnight stay we are writing this extensive review about the hotel, so that you as parents can get a good impression of this family-friendly hotel.
Table of contents
On Saturday afternoon we drive to the hotel a little outside Leiden and park the car in the free parking lot near the hotel. The hotel has a very nice location and from the hotel you are in a few minutes in the city of Leiden, on the beach of Noordwijk and at the Keukenhof. In that respect, the hotel is an ideal starting point when you want to see these sights.
We must honestly say that we are really fans of the van der Valk hotels, as the hotels are super family-friendly, there are lots of facilities, the service is super good and almost all the hotels have a very modern and fresh look. This is also the case at the van der Valk Hotel Sassenheim-Leiden and the entire common area at the reception already looks fantastic.
Whereas last time at the Eindhoven branch we did not make reservations for dinner at the restaurant, now we indicate right away that we want to eat at the restaurant that night. Fortunately, there is still room in the restaurant!
Besides the good location of the hotel there is also a casino in the hotel, you can use the hotel’s sauna with sun beds (we did this and it was wonderful) and for the active parents the hotel also has a gym. In short, all facilities are available for a wonderful night out with and without the kids.
The hotel has one family room that we booked during this weekend. This is really a fantastic room. We had obviously already seen the pictures online, but in real life we found the room even more beautiful. The spacious 35m2 family room has a large king-size bed for the parents and a very cool bunk bed for the kids. There is also a bunk bed in this section, so you can sleep as many as four kids here.
This bunk bed has all kinds of toys in the cabinets and each bed has a separate TV. There are a total of four different TVs in this family room. The open bathroom has a spacious shower stall with rain shower. In that regard, this family room is fully equipped. In that respect, it really is a very nice room to relax with the family.
In addition, kids aged 3 to 9 receive a kids’ box in their room with special care products for children. Our daughter always loves things like that. In addition, if you are a family in the family suite, you get a mini-bar package with special treats for kids.
In addition to this family room, it is also possible to book linkable Comfort Rooms. These are two hotel rooms connected by a connecting door, where it is one room, but where you have privacy as parents. Especially with older kids, this is obviously a very nice option.
Food and drink in hotel
The van der Valk Sassenheim-Leiden has three different restaurants where you can go for a bite to eat and a drink. We ate for dinner and for breakfast at Restaurant Nest. We list the hotel’s various restaurants below.
Restaurant Nest: in the evening we dined at this restaurant and it was very tasty. This a la carte restaurant is very atmospheric and it also has a huge eye for kids. For example, there is plenty of entertainment for kids in the restaurant’s separate play area. Here they can have fun playing games on the Playstation, coloring, playing with blocks or watching a movie. Our daughter had a great time here in this play area.
They also have a really fun menu for kids called the World Eaters menu. All of the dishes on the menu are based on five different countries, and the booklet they receive contains lots of fun assignments, games and coloring pages that will keep them entertained for quite a while. We had a delicious 3 course meal here with our daughter. Afterwards, our daughter (after the ice cream) was also allowed to pick out a toy, so her evening was all good.
In the morning we also took advantage of the breakfast and, as in fact in all van der Valk hotels, it is super good and extensive. In the Netherlands we can’t complain about the buffets offered by restaurants anyway, but at van der Valk it’s just a little more extensive. So many different choices in sandwiches, spreads, sweets, egg dishes, juices, fruits, nuts, yogurts and then we forget a whole bunch of other things. In that respect, it really comes highly recommended.
Live Cooking: this restaurant is open on weekends and holidays and you can use the buffet here during lunch and dinner. What’s fun for kids at this restaurant is that the restaurant has days when kids can bake their own pizza. We did not eat here ourselves.
Ozzo Oriental Restobar: We also hesitated for a while to eat at this restaurant, as we are sushi lovers as a family. This restaurant also looks very cool inside (Oriental). If you and your kids love sushi, then this restaurant is definitely a good option.
We really enjoyed our overnight stay at the van der Valk Hotel Sassenheim-Leiden. Conveniently located from Noordwijk, Leiden and Keukenhof, the hotel has huge facilities for families with kids. We had a super de luxe family room here that was completely set up for kids and was fully equipped. In addition, the hotel has three restaurants, where you can enjoy good food and drinks. We had delicious meals here both in the evening and in the morning. These restaurants also cater to kids.
