Van der Valk Hotel Mechelen with kids: a review!

Last weekend, we once again visited one of Belgium’s most family-friendly cities: Mechelen. There is plenty to do in Mechelen for families with kids and we wrote the blog Mechelen with kids in the past, where we listed all the fun activities of this city for kids. During this city trip, we stayed at the van der Valk Hotel Mechelen and as a result of this overnight stay, we are writing this comprehensive review!

The hotel

We drive towards Mechelen on Saturday afternoon and park our car in Parking Keerdok which is opposite the hotel. This (paid) parking tower is brand new and we found the prices to park very reasonable. From this parking garage, we walked to the hotel in a few minutes.

The hotel is located in an old historic building, but inside it looks very nice and luxurious. In terms of location, the hotel is just outside the city center, but in about ten minutes we walked from the hotel toward the city’s Grand Place. Near the parking garage is also a large supermarket, where you can also get some things if you would like to do so.

In addition, the hotel has a gym for active parents and it is possible to rent bikes, SUP boards and kayaks at the hotel. In short, there are plenty of facilities at the hotel itself.

The room

The room we booked with the hotel was the Superior room. This room was about 27m2 with a double bed for us as parents and for our daughter an extra bed had been added in the room. In that regard, the room was fully equipped for relaxing.

In fact, the rooms feature a flat-screen TV, desk, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, telephone, safe and minibar. This room also has a coffee maker and a kettle for tea. This room was at the back of the hotel building. Also, the hotel room had a luxurious bathroom with shower.

The hotel has several rooms, some of which suites are very large. For more information on the different rooms offered by the van der Valk Hotel Mechelen, take a look here.

Food and drink in hotel

The hotel has an A La Carte Restaurant, called Den Ouwen Bok, where you can go three times a day for a snack and a drink. There is also a section on the menu for kids, where kids can choose from dishes such as Spaghetti, Chicken Nuggets and Currywurst.

In addition, the hotel has a bar (bar Bernard), where guests can have a drink and this bar also has a large terrace where you can enjoy a drink in the sun during the summer months. We ourselves only used the breakfast in the morning at the restaurant and it was really super good!

We have stayed in many hotels and therefore had many breakfast buffets, but this one was very extensive. Lots of different choices regarding sandwiches, spreads, sweets, juices, nuts and cereals, yogurt and then we forget super many things. In addition, it is possible to have a glass of Cava at breakfast and the restaurant also has a variety of hot egg dishes and pancakes. In this regard, the breakfast is really recommended and we had a wonderful breakfast here.
