Essaouira with kids

Visiting the town of Essaouira with children is definitely a fun addition if you are touring Morocco. This city is known throughout Africa for its strong winds throughout the year. That also makes it a little less warm in Essaouira. In addition, it is a nice place to relax for a while at the end of your trip. We visited Essaouira at the end of our tour of Morocco and in this blog we list all the fun kids’ activities in Essaouira.

Best travel time Essaouira with children

You can actually visit the town of Essaouira with children all year round. It doesn’t rain much in the city and temperatures don’t drop below 15 degrees anytime soon. From the month of April, temperatures begin to rise and it is around 23 degrees. In the summer months it can be very hot, but then it is nice that there is a breeze so it does not feel super hot.

We visited Essaouira in the summer months, but found the temperature in the city here quite tolerable (unlike other cities in Morocco). Through November, temperatures remain above 20 degrees and you can still visit the city just fine.

#1 Old town of Essaouira

The old city of Medina is visited by most families with children. Unlike many cities in Morocco, the core of the city (the medina) is very quiet and very organized. You can walk around just fine and you don’t have to deal with very narrow alleys here. Therefore, getting lost in Essouira’s medina will not happen easily. Still, it’s fun to take a tour of the medina.

High fortress walls surround the city, making it resemble a large castle. Also on these walls are the old cannons of the past that you can visit for free. Especially with children, this is fun to check out. You also have an excellent view from the walls, and toward the end of the day you can also watch the sun set nicely from the walls.

You also have a viewpoint at Skala du Port that you can visit, but the view is not super good. The entrance fee is 50 dirhams, so especially with a family, the amount can then add up quite a bit. We spent an afternoon walking around the old town and found it to be mostly a very relaxing walk. In terms of sights, it is not the most exciting medina in Morocco, but it is nice and uncluttered. You can also drive a baby carriage around here just fine.

#2 Beach of Essaouira

You can also go to the beach in Essaouira with children. Near the city is a spacious beach that is up to 2 kilometers long. There is also a kind of promenade on the beach with all kinds of stores. This is also a great place to walk along the beach. The beach also has a small paid play area (10 dirhams) for children to play. This just doesn’t amount to much.

It is possible to go to the beach for a morning or an afternoon, and as you can see from the pictures below, when we were there the beach was very crowded. You can rent a bed to enjoy lying on the beach. It is possible for women to lie on the beach in bikini, but as you can also see from the pictures, this is not the standard. Therefore, it can be a bit uncomfortable for women.

#3 The port of Essaouira

The third fun place to go in Essaouira with children is the town’s port. Every afternoon the fish of the day is brought in here, which is definitely a must-see. You then see the fishermen taking the fish out of the different boats and in the process you see different kinds of fish. Besides, we found it a very photogenic place with all those blue boats in the harbor.

It is therefore not surprising that you can eat fresh fish in Essouira’s restaurants everywhere. If you are a lover of fish, Essouira is a good place to go.

Child-friendly restaurant Essaouira

You can eat very well in Essaouira with children. There are quite a few kid-friendly restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat. Essaouira also has a large Carrefour supermarket, where you can get most products that they often do not have in the somewhat smaller supermarkets. As a result, it is even perfectly possible to cook for yourself.

But eating out at a restaurant doesn’t have to be super expensive either. We list below some great kid-friendly restaurants in Essaouira.

Ocean Vagabond: If you’re looking for a kid-friendly restaurant in Essaouira where you can eat great food, this is a very good option. Ocean Vagabond is on the beach and you can see the camels and horses passing by on the beach from the restaurant. So there is plenty to see especially with children. The terrace has many trees with shade and you also have lovely recliners here. So a fine beach club to spend a few hours.

Dar Kenavo: This kid-friendly restaurant does lie slightly outside the city a 20-minute drive away, but it is possible for the restaurant to pick you up from town. Of course, you can also arrange a cab yourself and drive to the restaurant. The great advantage of this restaurant is that there is a swimming pool near the restaurant, so children can play at the pool during lunch or dinner. If you don’t have a pool at your accommodation either, this is a great solution to still be able to use the restaurant’s pool.

Taros Café: you should go to this restaurant mainly for the view and atmosphere and a little less for the food. It’s best just to have a drink here and enjoy the view with your kids. In the evening there is also live music here, but it is late and especially with children that can be too late.

Truskala Café: If you are looking for a tasty vegetarian restaurant then this restaurant is a good option. A very cozy place to eat and the food here is very good. By the way, in addition to vegetarian dishes, they also serve several fish dishes here.
