# 1 Medina of Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen’s medina is the city’s biggest attraction. Because Chefchaouen is known as the blue city of Morocco, the old city is very photogenic. You have a maze of streets here and the color blue can be seen everywhere. This causes you to see tourists taking pictures everywhere in the various streets.

Therefore, some streets can be quite crowded with tourists. If you still want to have the medina a little to yourself, it’s best to go to the medina with your kids as early in the day as possible. The city is known for its products made of wool, so you will find many stores selling blankets and rugs. Together with the beautiful colors of the city, this gives very photogenic pictures.

You have a lot of stairs in the Old Town, so a baby carriage is not very convenient in this city. One big advantage of these stairs, however, is that there are few scooters unlike many other cities in Morocco. The Old Town is also car-free, so you won’t see cars here either. With kids, this is obviously very nice. You may sometimes find it difficult to get your bearings in the old medina, but if you keep walking down into the city, you will always end up back on the main road.

By the way, also visit the cozy central square (Plaza Uta El-Hammam) in the city. Here you will also find the Kasbah and the Grand Mosque, and in this square there are several restaurants and cafes where you can go for a snack and a drink.

#2 View at Spanish Mosque

Most tourists come to Chefchaouen because of the beautiful blue houses and if you drive up to the city by car, you will already see a beautiful picture of all those houses on the mountain. You also have a nice viewpoint in town itself that you can walk to. Especially when the sun goes down, it is a beautiful place to go.

This place is the Spanish mosque running up the mountain. It’s about a 15-minute walk up the mountain and definitely doable with kids as well. You have a great view of the city from here. Especially when the sun is about to set. It is already a little less warm by then, which also makes the hike less intense.

The mountain can be very crowded with other tourists who had the same idea, but of course that doesn’t matter for the beautiful view. By the way, on the way to the Spanish Mosque, you can also stop at the Ras el Maa waterfall located on the outskirts of the city. Here you can sometimes see the women washing clothes in the water. It’s a small waterfall, but fun to check out for a while.

#3 Cascade d’Akchour

There is also plenty to see in the area around Chefchaouen with kids. For example, the town of Akchour is about a 45-minute drive from Chefchaouen and is known for its beautiful nature and beautiful waterfalls. The town is located in Talassemtane National Park. When you arrive at the national park by rental car, you can go out with a guide (they offer themselves automatically) or you can explore the park on your own. This is fine to do by yourself, so a guide is not necessary.

You have several waterfalls and several lakes in the national park. Nature is beautiful here and you can swim with kids everywhere. So be sure to bring swimwear when you visit the national park. Just keep in mind that the water is quite cold. You can walk several trails in the park and decide in advance how many hours you want to walk with the kids.

This also depends a bit on how old your kids are. You have trails in the park to the big waterfall, for example, where you really have to walk for a few hours. With small kids, that’s probably too much, but there are plenty of other waterfalls you can check out with young kids.
