Volendam with kids: all the information for the family!
It is always fun to visit Volendam with kids for a day. You can have some great food and drinks by the water and, of course, it is also fun to have a photo taken with the family in traditional costume. Still, there is more to do in this quaint village. We visited Volendam with our family when we took a city trip to Amsterdam with the family during the vacations. We had been there a few weeks earlier, but then the weather was extremely bad, so we traveled to Volendam once again to get a better idea of the village. We list the best activities in Volendam with kids for you in this blog.
Table of contents
Volendam with kids: Experience Volendam
Taking a picture in traditional costume is surely the number one activity in Volendam, and we and friends have had our picture taken several times when we were in Volendam. With our daughter we had never done this before, so of course the photo in costume could not be missed. You obviously have several companies in Volendam where you can have a photo taken of your family, but when we went online to see which companies all offered this, one company stood out for us: Experience Volendam.
At this company you can not only have the traditional photo taken, but you can also get a tour from a guide who will tell you about the Volendam of the past. At the end of this tour, everyone will get VR glasses on and enter a world of Volendam of the past and when the dikes were flooded.
We had never really had VR glasses on before, but thought this was a really cool experience. You can look around 360 degrees with the glasses and you really feel like you’re in the boat with the protagonist. Our daughter also enjoyed this very much. We did the tour first and then had the photo taken here.
They first took pictures themselves with their own professional camera and then they took some more pictures with our own camera. Because of this, we also had several photos digitally afterwards. Sophie also absolutely loved dressing up and seeing mom and dad in those weird clothes. We also had the photo (which we liked best) printed out twice at the store in addition to the digital photos, and these photos are now on Sophie’s bedroom and our living room. A great memory of a fun day in Volendam.
In the end, we spent over an hour in this establishment that is on the main street (the Dike) of the village. We thought it was a very nice experience! Highly recommended in our opinion if you are taking a day trip to Volendam with kids. By the way, at Experience Volendam you can also book a children’s scavenger hunt through the village of Volendam and there is a possibility to explore the surroundings of Volendam on an e-scooter with the family.
Volendam with kids: by boat to marken
Another thing most tourists do in Volendam is take the boat(the Marken Express) from Volendam to the village of Namur. On the boat the “Jan Smit” you will sail to Marken in about 30 minutes. Of course, you can sit inside or outside during the boat ride. When we were there, the weather was bad and then everything quickly looks gray and gloomy.
The village of Marken is nice to walk around, but we honestly didn’t find it very special either. Still, we think it already makes a big difference if you visit the village on a sunny day. You can then walk a somewhat larger route across the island and walk to the lighthouse, for example. You can also visit the Marker Museum in this village, which tells the history of the village and focuses on fishing.
Volendam with kids: other activities
There are still more things to do in Volendam with kids than the ones we described above. We just have not yet undertaken these activities ourselves. We briefly name them below.
Guided bike tour: it is also possible to discover Volendam with kids by bike. The organization Baja Bikes organizes bike tours of about three hours, during which you will visit the villages of Volendam, Monnickendam and Marken. You will also go on a portion of the boat during this bike tour. Kid bikes are available for kids as young as five, but they also have rear child seats that you can book.
Speeltuin de Speelderij: If you want to visit a large playground in Volendam with kids, this is a good option. Admission is only a few euros and from the Dike it is a little more than a 15-minute walk to this playground. Please note that on weekends the playground is only open in the afternoon.
Eating and drinking in Volendam with kids
In Volendam, on the Dijk, you have plenty of nice restaurants where you can eat with your kids. Especially if you can sit on the terrace in good weather, it is very pleasant with tourists. We had lunch at café De Boer next to the departure point of the Marken Express. Here they had a bit of the standard lunch dishes you can get at most restaurants on the Dike such as pancakes, fries with a burger, croquettes with bread and an omelette. Of course, you can also order fresh fish anywhere.
If you want to go for a cheaper option, you can get fries on the dike or something tasty at the fishmonger’s. The Dike is of course the street where all the tourists pass by and you can see that because of this there is plenty in terms of food, drinks and sweets to be had in this street.
Spending the night in Volendam with kids
You can stay in Volendam with kids in few hotels. The only option you have near Volendam is the van der Valk Hotel Volendam. Now you can easily visit Volendam from Amsterdam, as it is just over twenty minutes to Volendam by car from Amsterdam. In Volendam you have entertainment for a day at most, making it easy to do in a day trip from Amsterdam.
There is enough for kids to do in Amsterdam to keep you entertained for at least a week. We already wrote a blog about it(Amsterdam with kids) and gave dozens of tips here on what you can do in Amsterdam with the family. In Amsterdam we also stayed several times in different hotels and based on that we can give some good suggestions.
Volkshotel Amsterdam: in this hotel we found the atmosphere very relaxed. Downstairs you have plenty of space to play games with your kids in, for example, the playroom or the casual cafe/restaurant. What is very cool about this hotel is that they have some hot tubs on the roof of the hotel, where you have a great view of the city. You can also dine here at night on the top floor with a nice view of the city.
Banks Mansion Amsterdam: what we especially loved about this hotel in the middle of the city center was the all-inclusive principle the hotel uses. You can have a nice after-dinner drink here with your kids after a day in the city. Also, the rooms are luxurious and the location is super!
Olympic Hotel Amsterdam: this hotel is located next to the Olympic stadium and you can walk to the Vondelpark in just over ten minutes. This hotel also has beautiful rooms with stunning views of the surrounding area. And at this hotel, too, they have hot tubs overlooking the city. Also at this hotel we really enjoyed the view and bathing in the hot tubs with our daughter.
