Nice is located on the Côte D’azur in southern France, and during a trip to this area, we also visited this city. A city trip of a few days is perfectly possible. Besides being located on the beach, the surrounding area is also worth exploring by car. The city also has a number of fun things to visit with kids. We have listed for you the top 5 attractions in Nice with kids.
Table of contents
Nice with kids #1: parc phoenix
Parc Phoenix is located slightly outside the city center and is a recreational park with 70 different species of animals and 2,500 species of plants. Do not expect lions or elephants in this park, but mainly some smaller animals such as flamingos, crocodiles and pigs. It’s a nice outing to walk around for an hour or two.
What is nice about the park is that there is also a large playground at the back of the park. At the playground itself, you may also be able to picnic on the various benches and tables available at the playground. We did not bring our own food, but there is a kind of snack bar in the park, where you can buy some food and treat your kids to ice cream.
In that regard, you don’t have to settle for the price either. Kids under 11 get in for free, and for adults, admission costs a few euros. You can reach the park by car (2 hours of free parking on presentation of your entrance ticket), by bus (lines 9, 10 and 23) or, as we did, by bike.
Nice with kids #2: Renting bikes
What we liked immensely when we visited the city of Nice was the bikes we rented. Nice has a long promenade along the beach and it is wonderful to cycle along the long coastal strip with a nice breeze in your face. We rode from the center of Nice to Parc Phoenix along the boulevard, which was a very nice ride on the bike, where you get to see the entire boulevard.
This is a single ride of about half an hour. So for us a great mode of transportation to get to this park from downtown and also see the entire promenade on the way.
There are plenty of bike rental companies in Nice online. Similarly, you have two Dutch companies that rent bikes in Nice. Those are Holland Bikes and BimBim Bikes.
By the way, bicycles are not the only means of transportation for getting around Nice with kids. A tourist train also runs through the city (which our daughter always really enjoys) and the famous hop on hop off bus also runs through the city. We ourselves always like it best anyway when (as on biking) we are not dependent on public transportation and can go wherever we want.
Nice with kids #3: the beach
Nice is located on the beach, so if you’re on a city break in Nice with kids, you can’t skip the beach. Is the beach in the middle of downtown nice to lie on? Well, honestly, not really. As you can see from the photos below, the beach consists mainly of rocks and much less white soft sand. For kids this is not a problem, as they enjoy playing with the pebbles, but for parents those pebbles are not really comfortable.
Fortunately, you can rent beach chairs on the beach at the various beach clubs, and of course in the stores on the Promenade des Anglais boulevard you also have options to buy something like a beach chair so you are a little more comfortable. So the beach here is not comfortable, but the boulevard is bustling. There is plenty to see.
Tip: do bring something like water shoes for your kids so they can easily walk on the stones.
If you still prefer to lie on a lovely sandy beach, you can go to the following beaches with your kids:
- Villefranche-Sur- Mer: This is the most popular sandy beach in the city of Nice and is located just outside the city. You then take the bus for 20 minutes (Number 81 or 100, stop at Octroi) and then walk down a bit (15 minutes) and you are on this lovely sandy beach. At this beach you will also find some restaurants where you can eat a sandwich with the kids or get an ice cream.
- Beaulieu-Sur-Mer: by bus (number 81 you will be here in half an hour. In terms of people, this bay is very quiet and the waves here are not high either. In that respect, this bay is also ideal for families with kids.
Nice with kids #4: Parc la Colline du chateau
Created on the remains of Nice’s old castle, this park is now especially recommended for families with kids. The park is located in the center at the end of the beach.
There is also a playground in this park, there is a cafe and a small fairground with a train. From the park you have a great view of the city of Nice, because the park is actually located on a mountain.
You can, of course, walk to the park, but that’s a tough climb up, especially with small kids, but you can also take the elevator or the tourist train.
Tip: A few minutes’ walk from this park you have the letters I LOVE NICE on the beach. Here you can take fun photos with your family (for an example, see the photo at the top of this travel blog).
Nice with kids #5: Promenade du Paillon
Promenade du Paillon is a lovely park right in the center. Several playgrounds can be found in this park for different age groups. There are dozens of fountains (see the photo below), where kids can have a great time, especially in the summer, and there is plenty of greenery to enjoy walking through this park.
Also, like many places in France, there is a merry-go-round here, which of course our daughter went on a few times. This park is definitely recommended if your kids need to burn off some energy by letting them play in the various playgrounds.
There are also plenty of benches in this park and a grassy area where you and the family can also have a great picnic. Get some yummy things at the supermarket and you can have a fun and inexpensive way to have lunch with the family!
Tip: Bring swimwear for the kids so they can play at the park’s fountains.
Nice with kids: car rental
If you are going to do the activities described above in Nice with kids, then a car will come in handy. Basically, there is public transportation in the city, but we still really like having our own car. We actually find the cars from Sunny Cars are always top notch!
You actually have all costs included in the price here and are insured for most things (including your deductible). We have had problems with this in the past with other rental companies, because all kinds of costs are added at the destination. With Sunny Cars, you know that’s not the case and that’s a nice feeling. You can additionally cancel the car 1 hour before your reservation free of charge. You can also rent a car in Nice with kids from Sunny Cars.
