Popeye Village Malta with kids: general information
Popeye Village is located in the northwest of the island and we drove there from our vacation address in Bugiba in just over fifteen minutes in our rental car. Actually, it can be visited from all over the country just fine in a day trip, as you can also get there from the capital Valetta in just over half an hour’s drive. We arrive at the village fifteen minutes before the park opens and we park the car for free in front.
You can also visit the park by bus and then take the bus to Mellieha Bay and from there take bus 101 to Popeye Village. Of course, this will take you a lot longer than driving to the village by car.
You can buy tickets to the park in advance through the website and then you won’t have to stand in line at the box office. In fact, most tourists visiting the park buy a ticket at the box office, which can create quite a long line. So you can avoid this by buying tickets online in advance.
You can visit the village in both summer and winter months. A different price applies for both periods, because in the summer months you can also use the village’s swimming facilities, which is not possible in the winter months. What struck us right away when we visited the village was the friendliness of the staff. Super friendly everyone greets you from the staff and an employee also spontaneously came to us asking if she could take a picture of our family at one of the cottages. Very thoughtful we thought!
Popeye Village Malta with kids: the Village
The village consists of about twenty cottages built to shoot the film. These cottages are beautifully situated in a bay and are fun to visit. So you can see different sets where the movie was shot and at different houses kids can play games and play with different props.
For example, you could play four in a row, throw bags into a certain bin and there was also a small course for the kids. In addition, at one of the cottages there is also a mini-golf course with several holes, which you can use for free. In that regard, we found it to be very kid-oriented and thus very family-friendly.
Popeye Village Malta with kids: the water section
Of course it is fun to take a tour of the village, but the most fun remains the water fun you can have here with the kids. We visited Popeye Village in the summer and then it was very hot, so it was very nice that we could cool off in the water.
There are actually two sections you can go to in Popeye Village Malta with kids. You have the pool with play equipment and you have the section with inflatable play equipment in the sea. At both sections there are plenty of beach beds to lie on, so you as a parent can relax even when the kids are playing.
Our seven-year-old daughter spent most of her time having fun at the inflatable play equipment and we have to be honest that we really enjoyed this ourselves. It’s a kind of trail you can run and, of course, the trick is not to end up in the sea. In doing so, you see that because kids are a lot lighter, they often run the course easier than adults. In the afternoon, they also hold a competition for those who want and then they see who can complete the course the fastest. Just watching this match we found hilarious.
In addition, for the smaller kids, the pool is a must. There is some kind of large playground equipment with several slides in the water and small kids can play here. You also have a small pool here that is a little deeper where you can swim with your kids.
Popeye Village Malta with kids: the shows
In addition to visiting the village and water areas, there are a variety of shows throughout the day. These are mainly shows starring Popeye in the village itself. There is also aqua gymnastics in the water area several times a day. You can almost compare it to some kind of entertainment team present in the village.
In addition, a film will also be shot during the day, which visitors can participate in. Our daughter also participated in this and enjoyed it very much. Afterwards, you can then watch the movie near the movie theater with a bag of popcorn. In that regard, there is plenty to do in the village.
Popeye Village Malta with kids: food and drink
As for food and drink, you can also visit Popeye Village Malta with kids! We had lunch there at noon at the restaurant and had a pizza, fries and pasta. You can sit here at the restaurant both outside and inside, and certainly outside you have a nice view of the bay and the village.
There are also several other stalls where you can buy something to drink and, for example, get a candy for the kids. We also found the prices we paid in the village itself to be not too bad if you compare this with the prices of amusement parks in the Netherlands, for example.
Popeye Village Malta with kids: conclusion
We really had a great time in the village for a whole day. We were there when the park opened and left the park by late afternoon. If it had been up to our daughter we would have stayed even longer. Especially on the inflatable play equipment in the water, our daughter played for a long time with one of us, leaving the other to relax and read a book on one of the free beach beds.
The village is mainly geared to young kids (because of the games and miniature golf), but we also saw plenty of youngsters who still really enjoyed doing the course on the sea as well.
