Last week we were once again in the city of Groningen with our daughter. We think the city of Groningen is really fantastic and tremendously family-friendly. That’s why we’ve visited the city several times already and have also written the blog Groningen with kids, where we listed all the children’s activities of the city. During our last city trip to Groningen we stayed with our family at the van der Valk Hotel Groningen Westerbroek and because of this stay we are writing this extensive review of the hotel.
General information hotel
What we always find a great advantage of van der Valk hotels is that the location of the hotel is often just outside the center, making the hotel extremely easy to reach. The van der Valk Hotel Groningen Westerbroek is just over a 10-minute drive from the center of Groningen and from the highway you can get to the hotel in no time by car.
You can park your car for free in the large parking lot near the hotel, so you don’t have to bother with paid parking in the center either. The hotel is also on the edge of nature park the Hondsrug in Groningen, so you can go from the hotel straight into nature with kids. You can explore the area with a bicycle or an e-chopper that you can rent at the hotel.
We have rented an e-chopper several times at van der Valk hotels and with kids it is really a very fun way to explore the area. It is also possible to bring your dog to the hotel. For parents who like to exercise while staying at the hotel, they can go to the hotel’s gym. We ourselves did not do this.
The room
You can rent several rooms at the van der Valk Hotel Groningen Westerbroek, but for families with kids, the family room is the most suitable. We had also booked this room with the hotel and this room is suitable for families with 5 people. This room is 35m2 and in addition to a large box spring bed for us parents, it also had a bunk bed for our daughter with her own TVs!
With this bunk bed, it is then also possible to create an extra bed that sits at the bottom of the drawer of the bunk bed. So three kids can sleep here. In addition, this room has a luxurious bathroom with a large walk-in shower with two showers and a family sink for as many as 4 people. How cool is that? This also really makes you feel luxurious in the room.
In addition, this family room has all the amenities you would otherwise expect from a room. For example, the room has a refrigerator, a safe, a coffee machine, a flat-screen TV and air conditioning. There is also a sitting area with a desk, giving you plenty of space in the room. The WIFI in the room also worked well, which is always nice with kids.
Food and beverage hotel
As we are used to at van der Valk hotels, the van der Valk Hotel Groningen Westerbroek also offers great food. We had dinner here in the evening as well as breakfast in the morning and both were very good! You have The Falcon restaurant at the hotel, where you can have a bite to eat and also the Hotelbar, where you can go for a drink with cake or a snack.
For dinner, you have many different options at the restaurant, including several vegetarian options. Our daughter had the 3-course children’s menu here, where she had a tomato soup as a starter, fries with a snack as the main course and a nice ice cream in the famous van der Valk ice cream cup for dessert. This meant there was plenty of choice for every family member to eat something tasty.
In the morning we also took advantage of breakfast here and (as we are used to) it is always very extensive. Lots of different options in terms of sandwiches, spreads, sweets, fruits, juices, cereals and nuts and then we forget a lot of other things. You can have a nice egg fried by the cook, which means we always eat way too many yummy things and are only hungry again by the end of the day.
In that regard, both dinner and breakfast are highly recommended at the hotel. By the way, you can also visit the restaurant here for lunch. So big advantage that you basically don’t have to leave the hotel to eat.
Conclusion
We really enjoyed our stay at the van der Valk Hotel Groningen Westerbroek. The hotel is in a nice location with free parking and has beautiful family rooms that are very suitable for families with kids! In addition, you can enjoy delicious food and drinks at the hotel, so you don’t have to leave the door.
