Therefore, you can take wonderful photos with the family in this historic city. You don’t have super many really kid activities in Fez, but still, this city is definitely worth visiting with kids. We visited this city for 2 days and list the best children’s activities in Fez!

Table of contents

Toggle

Transportation in Fez with kids

Best travel time Fez

Children’s activities Fez

#1 The Medina

#2 Tannery

#3 Koranic schools Fez

#4 Jnan Sbil gardens

Other children’s activities Fez

Family-friendly restaurant Fez

Family-friendly hotel Fez

Organized roundtrip Morocco

Transportation in Fez with kids

Much of the city you can explore on foot, eliminating the need to use other transportation. In terms of public transportation, there are city buses running through the center, but with kids we would still recommend the cab. The petit cabs in Fez are red in color, but with a large family, not everyone may fit in the cab. Then you have to take the big cabs.

Best travel time Fez

It is best to visit Fez with kids during the months of April/May or September/October. In fact, during the summer months it can be very hot in the city. Temperatures then often rise well above 30 degrees, which is not very pleasant to visit a city with kids then. In the months before and after summer, the temperature is often between 20 and 30 degrees, which is obviously a lot more pleasant to visit a city. We visited Fez in the summer months and when we visited the medina during the day in the city, it was actually way too hot.

Children’s activities Fez

#1 The Medina

Fez’s Medina is the city’s most famous landmark and therefore highly recommended to visit during your city break to Fez with kids. This medina is the largest in the world and you can spend hours wandering the narrow alleys of this ancient city. All sorts of things are therefore offered at the various stalls.

You can keep taking pictures in this medina , because there are so many photogenic places. The medina is also recommended for kids. All those colors and smells are a real experience. We wander through this medina, but also regularly lose our way in this maze of streets. Still, there is something of a main road as it is slightly wider than the other alleys.

You can always ask directions from people in the medina itself, but you do have the chance that they will charge money for this afterwards. Several times we asked kids for directions and we would usually give them something like 10 dirhams (about 1 euro). Of course, you can also do some great shopping at this medina. Of course, make sure you always haggle, because if you accept the seller’s first offer you will pay way too much.

Also be sure to check out the Bab Bou Jeloud gate, which is the entrance gate to the medina. This beautiful gateway is beautifully decorated with mosaics and is well worth seeing. A great place to grab a drink near the Medina is at Café Clock. Here they have a nice rooftop terrace, where you have a good view.

By the way, if you visit the medina on a Friday, it can be quite deserted, as this is the holy day for Muslims. Consequently, some roads may be closed and it can be even more difficult to find your way around the maze of the medina.

#2 Tannery

In Fez, you can also visit a tannery in several places. We have also done this and it is definitely educational for kids to see exactly how the process works. They first clean the hides of a cow, dromedary, sheep or goat (in a mixture of water and pigeon droppings), then start working the hide and finally they also color the leather.

However, you should be aware that it can be quite smelly (at least we found that). In addition, the colored trays where the leather is colored are very photogenic. For example, you can visit the Chouara tanneries. There you have several stores and from above you can already see the tanneries.

Of course it is possible to buy, say, a leather bag in one of these stores, but if you don’t want to buy anything and just want to have a look, agree with the owner of the store that you will pay, say, 5 or 10 dirhams entrance fee to see the process. Keep in mind that on hot days the smell of the tanneries can be quite intense for kids.

#3 Koranic schools Fez

One of the most beautiful places in Fez are the two Koranic schools you can visit. Here you can enter even as a non-Muslim, and here you can take beautiful pictures. The schools Al-Atterine Medarsa and Bou Inania Medersa have beautiful mosaics and the earlier you are here in the day, the quieter it is and then you really have the schools to yourself.

Both schools are located in the center of the city of Fez, and from Fez’s famous medina you can walk to both schools in about 10 minutes. You pay a small admission fee at both schools. We ourselves, unfortunately, did not have time in our program to check out these schools and in retrospect do regret not checking them out.

#4 Jnan Sbil gardens

The medina of Fes is crowded and, especially in the summer months, the temperature can also be quite high. It is then nice to take a break from the tranquility of nature with kids. The Jnan Sbil gardens are a good option then! These gardens are within walking distance of the medina’s special gateway (Bab Boujloud).

The gardens are one of the oldest gardens in the city and you can have a great stroll here. The gardens are well maintained and you have benches everywhere here, where you can take a break from the hustle and bustle. There is also a beautiful pond in the park. Please note that on Mondays the gardens are closed.

Other children’s activities Fez

You do have a number of sights worth visiting with kids in Fez in addition to those mentioned above. We list them briefly below.

#5 Palace of Fez: You can also see a beautiful palace in Fez with kids. This palace is also located in the center of the city and looks very beautiful from the outside. Unfortunately, it is not possible to view the palace from the inside.

#6 Borj Fez Mall: If you love shopping, then this mall can be a nice option. The Borj Fez mall is a modern mall where you also have a food court where you can eat great food. In addition, there is a large Carrefour supermarket in the mall, where you can buy groceries and where they have many products that they do not have in the somewhat smaller supermarkets in the city. The mall also has a Fun Park for the slightly younger kids, where they can play. .

#7 View of Fez: It is possible to see the city of Fez from a great height with kids. You can walk to the Marinid Tombs where you have a great view of the city. Since you walk up the mountain, this can be tough with small kids. Therefore, you can also be dropped off by a cab for a few dirhams. It’s then best to indicate to the cab that you want to be dropped off at the Les Merinides Hotel. This hotel is familiar to most drivers and from here it is a few minutes’ walk. You can then also take a cab from the hotel back to the city center.

#8 Day trip to Meknes: The city of Meknes is also one of the royal cities of Morocco and is less than an hour’s drive away from Fez. Again, the old city center is beautiful to visit. Especially with a rental car, you can make an excellent day trip to Meknes from Fez. If you don’t have a rental car, then an organized tour is the best option. You will then visit Volubilis and Moulay Idriss in addition to the city of Meknes. For more information about this tour, take a look here.

#9 Day trip to Chefchaouen: this is the blue city of Morocco and one of the most visited destinations in Morocco. You can get here from Fez in a day trip, but that is a very long day. In fact, you drive a little over 3 hours to this destination, which can be a bit on the long side with kids. This city is beautiful and very nice to visit. Of course, you can also choose to spend a night in Chefchaouen. Another option is to take an organized tour from Fez to visit this beautiful destination. You have lots of atmospheric restaurants in Fez’s medina where you can grab a bite to eat. We list some family-friendly restaurants below.

Café Clock: as we mentioned earlier, this restaurant is a nice restaurant to go out to eat and that is partly because of the beautiful view.
