The beaches of the Whitsunday Islands are beautifully white and we found them just as beautiful as we had seen them 18 years earlier as backpackers. The Whitsunday Islands are an enchanting archipelago of 74 islands located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, along the east coast of Queensland, Australia. They are known for their pristine white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, making them an ideal destination for families seeking adventure and relaxation in nature. What makes the Whitsundays special?
Indigenous Culture: The islands are the traditional homelands of the Ngaro people. Families can learn more about the rich history and culture of indigenous people through cultural tours and interactive experiences.
Whitehaven Beach: This world-famous beach on Whitsunday Island is famous for its pure white silica sand and turquoise waters. It is a perfect place for families to swim, build sandcastles and enjoy a picnic overlooking the clear water. This is really the highlight of these islands we found!
Snorkeling and Diving: The islands offer access to some of the best snorkeling and diving sites in the world. Families can discover colorful fish, sea turtles and coral reefs in the calm waters surrounding the islands. After all, you are in the famous Great Barrier Reef!
Boating and Boat Trips: The Whitsundays are a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. Families can participate in day trips or overnight cruises to explore the islands, spot whales (June through September) and enjoy the sea.
Tours to the Whitsunday Islands
You can book all kinds of tours to the Whitsunday Islands with the family! You can make it as crazy as you would like. Thus, you can choose a tour of several days or a day tour. We ourselves opted for a day tour, since we never liked spending several days on a somewhat smaller boat with our daughter. Basically, you can visit the islands just fine in a day.
If you go on a day tour, there are also several options. There are several types of tours suitable for families:
Boat trips
Many families choose a day trip on a catamaran or comfortable boat. These tours often take you past several islands and make a stop at Whitehaven Beach. Here kids can play in the powder-white sand and shallow water. There are often shaded areas and facilities on board, so you can keep it relaxed.
Snorkeling Tours
For families with slightly older kids, there are tours where you can snorkel in addition to island hopping. The Great Barrier Reef and the coral gardens surrounding the islands are full of colorful fish. Swim vests and snorkel kits for kids are usually available, keeping it safe and accessible.
Half-day tours
With young kids, a full day at sea can sometimes be a bit long. A half-day tour is then a fine option. You usually visit one or two islands and have plenty of time to swim, play and enjoy yourself without getting too tiring.
Multi-day sailing trips in the Whitsundays
A multi-day boat trip is a great way to really experience the Whitsunday Islands. With several nights on the water or on islands, you can get farther away than with day trips alone, and the trip gets more rest and adventure.
What to expect approximately.
- Usually depart from Airlie Beach, the main base for Whitsundays tours.
- You will stay aboard a sailboat (sometimes ex-raceboat, trimaran, etc.). Sometimes you sleep one night on the beach.
- There are many stops: islands, snorkeling spots, beaches (especially Whitehaven Beach, and viewpoints or sandbars like Hill Inlet). Sometimes you get there early, before day trips arrive, which can give extra rest.
- The days are varied: boating, swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, relaxing. Evenings are often informal: eating, socializing, stargazing.
- Accommodation is usually simple: dormitories downstairs on the boat, shared facilities (showers, toilets). Comfort is limited, but the atmosphere often makes up for a lot.
Pros and cons of multi-day tours (for families)
We list some advantages and disadvantages for the Whitsunday Islands with kids for a multi-day tour.
Advantages
- Quieter schedule: you don’t have to go back every day, you have time to rest and really enjoy the environment.
- More opportunities for snorkeling and exploring less touristy spots.
- Adventurous: also the sailing itself, the crew, the nights at sea and that is a special experience for kids.
- Sometimes sleeping on the beach, which is often a great experience for kids.
Disadvantages and concerns
- Limited comfort: sleeping on a boat can be cramped, with noise and shared bathrooms. Not always ideal with young kids.
- Movement at sea can cause nausea in kids or adults.
- You must be well prepared: seaworthy clothing, protection from the sun and bring plenty of snacks.
- Safety aspects: sea, sun and limited shade make you have to be constantly alert.
Tips for making a multi-day tour family-friendly
If you do want to book a multi-day tour, we have some additional tips for families with kids.
- Choose a shorter duration if your kids are young: 1-2 nights is often enough to enjoy without overloading.
- Check sleeping accommodations: ask if there are separate cabins or instead dormitories.
- Check amenities such as shaded areas on board, life jackets and washrooms.
- Take seasickness medication with you and protect yourself well from the sun.
- Provide snacks and check for family-friendly meals on board.
- See if the crew is flexible with the program so that it doesn’t become too heavy for kids either.
What should you pay attention to when visiting the Whitsunday Islands with kids?
A vacation to the Whitsunday Islands is a dream for many families, but there are some practical things to consider to make your stay as enjoyable and safe as possible.
Safety in and around water: The water around the Whitsundays is beautiful, but some places have strong currents or coral reefs. Take care when swimming and snorkeling, and make sure kids are always supervised. Life jackets are a must when kayaking, boating or paddleboarding.
Sun and heat: The tropical climate means bright sunshine and high temperatures. Protect kids well with sunscreen, hats, light clothing and plenty of water to prevent dehydration. This is especially important on Whitehaven Beach and during boat rides.
Age-appropriate activities: Not all adventures are suitable for young kids. Choose activities that are appropriate for your kids’ age and energy level. Shorter boat trips, quiet beaches and shallow snorkeling spots are often more pleasant for young families.
Best travel time Whitsunday Islands with kids
The Whitsunday Islands have a tropical climate, meaning the weather is warm year-round, but there are distinct differences between the seasons. For families traveling with kids, it is important to consider both the weather and the crowds on the islands.
June to August – Australian winter: This period is often considered the best time to visit the Whitsundays. It is cooler and drier than the rest of the year, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as snorkeling, swimming and boating. The chance of rain is minimal and the humidity is pleasant. This season also coincides with whale season, which can be an extra spectacle for kids.
September to November – Spring: Temperatures rise slowly and the weather remains mostly dry and sunny. The water is still pleasantly warm for swimming and snorkeling. This period is less crowded than the winter vacations, giving families more peace and quiet to enjoy the beaches and islands. We visited the Whitsunday Islands in September and had wonderful weather!
December to May – Summer and rainy season: During the Australian summer, it can be hot, humid and rainy. Tropical showers occur frequently, which may limit some activities. In addition, high season is during the Christmas and New Year vacations, making it busier and more expensive. For families with young kids, this period can be less comfortable, but those who don’t mind heat and occasional showers can still fully enjoy tropical paradise.

Our tour to the Whitsunday Islands
We chose a one-day tour of Ocean Rafting to the Whitsunday Islands. You can actually choose from two different day tours here. You have the Northern Exposure from Daydream Island. This is a visit to the Whitsunday Islands where you will do some more snorkeling. We chose the Southern Lights from Daydream Island and here the emphasis is more on visiting the beach.
What we found very cool about this organization is that you really go to the islands in a kind of speedboat. Therefore, the trip to the islands is also very cool and our daughter found that perhaps the most enjoyable part of the tour. You really shoot across the water in this. During our tour, we also went snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef and then visited Whithaven Beach.
We had been here 18 years ago and the beautiful white beaches made a huge impression on us then and still do now. It really is such a beautiful area that the beaches were really a highlight of our trip through Australia with our daughter for us. We first visited the southern beaches at Whitehaven Beach and then went to the main beach. Here we visited several viewpoints.
