What to do in Kandy with kids?
what to do in Kandy with kids #1 the botanical gardens
The first tip regarding what to do in Kandy are the botanical gardens. About a 20-minute tuktuk ride from Kandy are the city’s botanical gardens, which are beautifully landscaped. Hundreds of plants and trees can be found here, and at the end of the park there is also an exciting footbridge across the river (our daughter loved jumping hard on the footbridge and scaring the hell out of her mother who is afraid of heights).
For a few hours, it is great to walk through these gardens with your kids and let your kids climb the giant trees that are in this garden. In some trees, you can also spot huge bats. The entrance fee is about 7 euros per person.
what to do in Kandy with kids #2 Visit a temple in Kandy
In Kandy you have several temples, of which the Temple of the Tooth is surely the most famous. We won’t make our daughter very happy if we spend all day visiting temples, but as part of a day playing in the playground, swimming by the pool and eating ice cream somewhere, it’s a great activity to schedule in a day.
When we were at the Temple of the Tooth, it was very crowded. Very many school children, which our daughter found very interesting. So our advice would be to visit the temple early in the morning (when it is often not so hot either).
Other temples in and around the city include the Embekke Devalaya, Lankatilaka and Gadaladeniya temples.
what to do in Kandy with kids #3 the big playground by the lake
This tip regarding what to do in Kandy is for parents with kids. Every day we went to the playground at Kandy Lake for a few hours. The playground (
Senanayake Childrens Playground
) is located on a corner of the lake and has lots of playground equipment.
The playground, like basically everywhere else in Sri Lanka, is outdated, but a fun way to interact with the locals. Our daughter played here very often with the Sri Lankan kids and we had many conversations with the parents of the children here. A perfect way to connect with locals.
what to do in Kandy with kids #4 Walk around Lake Kandy
If you wouldn’t take a tuktuk to the Senanayake playground, you can also choose to walk along the lake on foot. You will encounter many school children, candy sellers and even a snake charmer. Also be sure to look around the water as the lake is home to several lizards and turtles. An ideal way to keep your kids busy by making it a game of who first sees a particular animal along the lake.
What to do in Kandy with kids #5 The cultural show of Kandy
The cultural show that begins at 5:30 p.m. every day features many different dancers, acrobats and fire-eaters. Around the Kandyan Art Association Hall there are many vendors with popcorn and candies, where you can buy something for your kids before the show. The show is a bit on the long side, but for the family to enjoy themselves for an evening like this, it is an excellent activity.
What to do in Kandy with kids #6 Go monkey spotting among the trees
Take a tuktuk up the mountain and be dropped off with your family at the
. This is a kind of rainforest, where you will encounter monkeys everywhere and have a beautiful view of the city of Kandy.
You pay a few euros entrance fee to visit the park and the routes you can walk are very clearly marked, so you can’t really go wrong.
What to do in Kandy with kids #7 The pool at the Suisse hotel
It’s always nice to cool off at a pool with kids after a full day of exploring all kinds of things. Our hotel did have a pool, but it was not very large. Fortunately, there is the possibility at the Suisse hotel (which is close to Lake Kandy) to swim in a large pool for a few euros (you can also specify that you want to have lunch there at noon, then you don’t have to pay for the pool).
This pool is not too deep and also has a children’s pool. There are also some playground equipment by the pool and they have ample beds. Most of the hotel’s guests are doing activities around Ella during the day, so you usually have the pool to your family during the day.
What to do in Kandy with kids #8 Take the train towards Ella
The final tip regarding what to do in Kandy is a
. For many families with kids, this will be one of the highlights of the Sri Lanka trip. The drive to Nuwara Eliya where you will make a stop by train takes about 4 hours and from Nuwara Eliya you should allow for another 3 hours to the town of Ella.
Of course, you can also get off at Nuwara Eliya and cut the train trip into two parts. If you want to know our tips for Nuwara Eliya click here. We definitely recommend traveling by train at least once to experience what this is like.
