What to do in Nuwara Eliya with kids #1 The tea plantations
The biggest attraction of Nuwara Eliya is the huge tea plantations you have here. A visit to these plantations is definitely not to be missed.
We ourselves have visited the tea plantations of the
visited when we drove from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by chauffeured car. This factory plus tea fields were on our route, so that saved a lot of travel time. We found it to be an ideal stopover and have already written a travel blog about the benefits of traveling with a chauffeured car.
At the Bluefield factory you will get a short tour and then you can walk through the tea fields. There is also a small playground at this plant, but it is vastly outdated. I myself (Joep) don’t like tea, so when my wife was tasting different kinds of tea, I and my daughter could indulge in the playground with her for a while.
Then we walked through the various tea fields, where several women were picking tea and with whom you could take pictures for a fee. Therefore, make sure you have some change with you if you enjoy taking a picture of these women.
What to do in Nuwara Eliya with childrenc #2 The Ramboda Waterfalls
These falls are located near the Bluefield factory and plantations and are on the road. Even with small kids, these waterfalls are good to visit, as there are stairs down through
which is located here.
We didn’t walk all the way down ourselves, but if you walk all the way to the base of the waterfall, you can even paddle in the water. Be careful with your kids that no accidents happen, as some of the stones are very slippery.
What to do in Nuwara Eliya with kids #3 Gregory Lake
Gregory Lake is Nuwara Eliya’s big lake and around the lake there is all kinds of things for kids to do. For example, a kind of fairground has been built next to the lake, where you can take a ride on the carousel, airplanes, trains or jump on the bouncy castle for little money.
You always buy coupons at a ticket booth that you can turn in at the various attractions. Of course, the attractions are very outdated, but for our daughter that didn’t matter at all.
In addition, you can rent several pedal boats at the lake, which you can use to sail around the lake. There are also several tents around the lake where you can have a drink overlooking the lake. Especially for a few hours, your kids can have a great time here.
What to do in Nuwara Eliya with kids #4 Victoria park
Victoria Park was one of our daughter’s favorite places, as the park has a large playground, where for a few euros you can entertain yourself for hours. Many school children could also be found in this playground every day (in Sri Lanka, a well-known school outing is that the kids go to Gregory Lake first and then to this playground in Nuwara Eliya.).
As a result, our daughter immediately had dozens of friends she could play with, and we as parents could enjoy our daughter and the sunshine with a drink on a bench.
100 meters from this playground is a lovely little restaurant where you can eat delicious Kottu for little money. It’s a hip little place outside where there are generally a lot of backpackers, so you can’t miss this place.
What to do in Nuwara Eliya with kids #5 Breakfast at the Grand Hotel
Start the day off right in Nuwara Eliya by having a sumptuous breakfast at the
. This hotel of yesteryear has a very extensive breakfast buffet for a few euros and for our daughter we did not have to pay anything.
Especially if, like us, you are in an accommodation that does not include breakfast, this is a very nice start to the day with your family. Of course, you can also stay at this hotel, then it is included in the price of the room.
What to do in Nuwara Eliya with kids #6 Horton Plains National Park
This activity is not recommended with young children and you could choose as parents that you take turns to go one morning while the partner goes with the kids to the playground in Victoria Park, for example. With older kids, this activity is doable.
Hit the road early in the morning and bring a warm sweater as it can be very cold. The earlier you go the less likely it is to be foggy at the summit. You will have to arrange a tuktuk in advance to take you to the park, but generally there is a tuktuk on every street corner.
The entrance fee depends on how many people you are with, but count on about 20 euros per person for park entrance anyway. The hike up is tough (you can walk it well without a guide), but the reward you get when you reach the top is priceless.
