South Africa travel itinerary with kids

You can do several travel itineraries through South Africa with kids! It kind of depends on how long you have as a family to explore this beautiful country. South Africa has beautiful nature with, of course, lots of wildlife to view, but also lots of fun other children’s activities. We ourselves traveled through the country for 3 weeks and in these 3 weeks we got a nice first impression of the country. In this blog, we list different options in terms of itineraries in South Africa.

Best travel time South Africa with kids

You can basically visit South Africa with kids at any part of the year. Basically, you don’t have an extreme rainy season in South Africa, so you would have to avoid certain periods. However, some months are better for certain activities than others. Another thing to know beforehand is that summer and winter here are reversed from Western Europe. Thus, it is summer here in the months of December through March and winter in the months of June through August.

The summer months of December through March are more suitable for swimming, for example. Especially with kids, it can be very nice to have a swim at the end of the day. Temperatures then are usually between 25 and 30 degrees. However, showers may be more frequent during this period.

In the winter months (June through August), it is between 15 and 20 degrees, which does mean less weather for swimming. However, there is less vegetation, which makes it easier to spot animals on a safari. Therefore, for a safari in South Africa with kids, this period is definitely suitable. Keep in mind that this is the busiest season in South Africa.

Therefore, the periods between these can be ideal in terms of weather and crowds. In the months of April and May, it is less crowded and the temperature is between 20 and 25 degrees. So ideal weather for exploring this beautiful country. In the months of September, October and November, the landscape becomes greener again and then the Garden Route is very beautiful to visit. Therefore, it is still between 20 and 25 degrees.

In short, there are no periods when you really can’t go. We ourselves were in South Africa in the months of July and August and then we had fine weather. The only thing we didn’t do much during this tour was swim.

Transportation during round trip South Africa

We rented a car in two places during our tour of South Africa (in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth) and did so both times through the rental company Sunny Cars. In fact, we almost always rent our car here, because all the insurance is included in the price, so you don’t have to worry about that on the spot. Sunny Cars also advises that you then no longer need to purchase insurance from the rental company in South Africa as well.

Organized roundtrip South Africa

Of course, you can also go on an organized tour of South Africa with the family. Of course, that saves a lot of research and then most of it is taken care of for your trip. You have several organizations that offer tours of South Africa for families. For example, the organization Sawadee offers trips of between 16 and 21 days for families with kids. There you can see exactly what they will be doing on these tours and what appeals to you as a family.

If you only have a week to travel through South Africa with kids then you have to make choices. You can then choose to explore the area around Cape Town or just the Johannesburg area including the Kruger Park. If you would like to go on safari, then you can perfectly well land at Johannesburg and spend a night there and then drive on to the panorama route.
