Sightseeing Negombo with kids: 5x things to do + other tips!

If you fly to Sri Lanka with your family you will land at the airport in the capital Colombo and most travelers then choose to spend the first and last days of the vacation in Negombo.

Negombo is about a 20-minute drive from the airport, which is less travel time than staying in the capital Colombo (30 minutes by cab). Therefore, to start your trip and take a rest from the long flight, it is definitely recommended to start in Negombo. You can easily entertain yourself for a few days in this city. We ourselves spent four days in this city and have listed all the sights Negombo with kids!

Sightseeing Negombo with kids #1 Swimming at the Jetwing Blue hotel

This is one of the nicest five-star hotels in Negombo, and the rooms are accordingly pricey. Still, if you lunch here, you can use the large pool. In addition, they have beds on the beach, so you can also take a dip in the sea with your kids.

We spent two days here having a wonderful sumptuous lunch from the buffet and our daughter had an extremely good time in the shallow pool and the sand of the beach.

You can also lie on the beach by yourself, but don’t expect the beach here to be very crowded with tourists. This is, of course, the cheapest option for experiencing a day at the beach. Just keep in mind that the sea can be quite wild. If you also want to sleep at the Jetwing Blue hotel then you can

Sightseeing Negombo with kids #2 Swimming at the Negombo water park

Yep, Negombo has its own water park with a few slides. The cost of admission is a few euros for the whole family, and for a few hours of entertainment, it is certainly a great activity. In addition, they have delicious smoothies that you can also order for little money. In this, don’t expect the pool to be super new, but you can’t expect that for the money.

The pool also overlooks the sea, so you can watch the locals and fishermen from this spot as well.

Sightseeing Negombo with kids #3 Boat ride through the canals and nature

A very nice excursion that you can often arrange from your hotel/ guesthouse. There are several providers and they all basically do the same tour. You sail through the canals of Negombo to open water and there you can eat delicious fruit and drink from coconuts in the water on plastic chairs.

Along the way, they sail past an island where you can feed monkeys with pieces of fruit. A fun trip that will take you about three/four hours and you will also see many activities of the locals on the water.

Sightseeing Negombo with kids #4 Visit Negombo fish market

Also one of the sights of Negombo is the fish market that is outside. We unfortunately only viewed this market from the water, but for kids, a tour of the market can be an experience to see all those different fish lying around.

Hundreds of fish are left to dry in the market and then pickled and displayed on the beach. By TukTuk, it is about a 10-minute drive from the tourist area with all the hotels and restaurants to the center of Negombo where this market is.

Sightseeing Negombo with kids #5 Pinnawela Elephant Sanctuary

This is not really a sight in Negombo itself, but can be driven from Negombo in about 2 hours by cab, but if you are traveling to Kandy town after Negombo, it is the perfect stopover with kids. Here you have the Pinnawela Elephant sanctuary and the Millennium Elephant foundation located. It’s an elephant sanctuary, where you can feed the elephants for a fee.

Admission for adults is 2,500 rupees (12.5 euros) and 1,250 rupees for kids. At the Millennium Elephant foundation, you can walk with the elephants (riding elephants is possible, but they prefer not to) and wash them. The cost for this is 6,000 rupees for adults and 3,000 rupees for kids.

Where can you eat good food in Negombo with kids?

Two eateries we can recommend in Negombo are King Coconut and the Beach lodge. These restaurants are both located on the beach. At King Coconut you can eat delicious food and your kids can have fun on the restaurant’s private sandy beach. In addition, our daughter found the large lobsters in various aquariums very interesting. At the Beach Lodge you can also eat well and sit outside.
