Duisburg with kids: top 7 sights!
Going to Duisburg with kids will not be your first thought right away, but that is certainly not justified. The city of Duisburg has more in store for families with kids than a lot of (larger) cities in the area. Therefore, there is enough to do in the city to keep you well entertained for at least two days. And that’s not even counting visits to area amusement parks. Following our visit to this city, we list the best attractions in Duisburg with kids.
Table of contents
Duisburg with kids #1: Landschaftspark
This huge park is great fun to visit in Duisburg. The park was created after the blast furnace complex ceased operation. This gives you a very cool industrial environment and makes it possible for kids to tour the old blast furnace because many places are accessible.
This allows you and your kids to climb all the way up the complex, and from the top you have a beautiful view of the surrounding area. We thought it was very cool to climb up here, but you just don’t have to be afraid of heights. There are also a number of playground equipment in the park that are also suitable for kids. However, we did actually expect to encounter many more playgrounds.
In fact, there is a water playground, but it is not in use and a large slide. There is also a large climbing wall for kids to climb. There are also places where kids can play in the sand, but you have to bring toys. Of course, it is also a great place to have a family picnic in good weather.
When we were there, it was just hosting a food festival that weekend and was very cozy and quite crowded. Still, it was not difficult to find a (free) parking spot for the car. You can have a great time here for an hour or two, and a bonus is that the activity is free. By public transportation, you can get to the park which is located in the north of the city in just over 15 minutes.
Duisburg with kids #2: Duisburg Zoo
The city of Duisburg also has a zoo, where you can easily spend half a day wandering around. The zoo consists of two parts connected to each other and most of the famous animals are present in the zoo such as elephants, lions, monkeys and giraffes. There is also a dolphinarium at the zoo.
Another special item at the zoo is the Chinese garden. A total of 388 different animals can be admired at this zoo. One of the zoo’s most special animals is the koala bear.
What makes the zoo so fun for kids is that there is plenty of playground equipment throughout the zoo. For example, you have a large playground in three different areas of the zoo, giving you a nice variety between animal viewing and play.
The advantage of this zoo is that its prices are a lot lower than the prices of zoos in the Netherlands. Of course, there are also plenty of places to eat at noon with the family at the zoo. We wrote the blog Duisburg Zoo with kids following our visit to this zoo .
Duisburg with kids #3: Binnenschifffahrtsmuseum
This museum is dedicated to the great inland port that is the city of Duisburg. Located in an old swimming pool, the museum has a boat in addition to the museum that you can tour with your kids. The disadvantage is that most exhibits are in German and there is not much interaction for kids. However, kids can play in a ship at the museum and there is also a small playground in the museum courtyard.
This museum is highly recommended if your kids love ships and if your family enjoys visiting a museum. If you have little time, we would only visit the first three sights described and the city center. The Binnenschifffahrtsmuseum is located in the north of the city, and public transportation gets you here in just under 20 minutes from the city center.
Duisburg with kids #4: Tiger&Turtle Sculpture
This special work of art is located south of the city of Duisburg and is fun to visit briefly with kids. We drive there on Sunday morning and park the car for free on the side of the road. From the road we can see the artwork on the hill and we are still quite surprised that it is a tough climb to the top.
After about ten minutes we reached the artwork and climbed it. The artwork is shaped like a roller coaster and looks attractive and unusual. You can climb the artwork from two sides, walking almost an entire loop. From the artwork you have a nice view of the surroundings.
Eventually, you also saw it after half an hour. Make sure that when your kids enter the artwork with flip-flops that they do not drop these flip-flops. Our daughter managed to drop her slipper through the steps, and it took us some effort to retrieve her slipper in the bushes.

A 6-minute walk from this water park is also the Legoland Discovery center. Here everything revolves around lego and kids can play to their hearts’ content.
Besides Legoland, you can also go to a branch of Sealife here, and there is also a large trampoline park and a shopping mall in the same area. So in short, you can easily go from Duisburg to Oberhausen for a day and do several activities here on the same day. We wrote about this city in the blog Oberhausen with kids.
#7 Moviepark Germany: about a 25-minute drive from Duisburg is another great amusement park where you can easily enjoy yourself for a day. They have attractions for young and older kids in this amusement park. There are also several shows and even a parade through the amusement park.
