Schiermonnikoog with kids: 7 top activities!

Can you enjoy a day in Schiermonnikoog with kids? That was the question we asked ourselves when we saw how small the island was. We really expected to have seen the whole island within a few hours with our daughter. Nothing could be further from the truth. We were there for a full day and could have easily spent a whole weekend on this beautiful Wadden Island! Based on our tour of the island, we list for you the best activities and attractions in Schiermonnikoog with kids.

Schiermonnikoog with kids: general information

Most tourists reach Schiermonnikoog by boat. The boats leave from the town of Lauwersoog in Groningen, and you can park your car at the port for a few euros a day. It is not possible to take your car onto the boat. The island is also not big, so there is no need for that.

It is possible to get to the boat by public transportation. Buses run from Leeuwarden and Groningen toward the port of Lauwersoog. On the island of Schiermonnikoog itself, it is also possible to explore the island by bus. These buses (both island and mainland) always wait for the boat to arrive (even if it is delayed).

For the crossing, you have a choice between express and ferry service. The express service is a smaller boat that gets to Schiermonnikoog in twenty minutes from Lauwersoog, and the ferry service is the big boat and it takes about fifty minutes. You can make reservations in advance on the Wagenborg Passenger Services website, but there can be quite a few people on the boat before it is full. Additional boats also operate during the vacations.

We bought tickets ourselves only at the box office, so we could decide at the last minute (based on the weather forecast) whether to go or not. So it became last minute Schiermonnikoog with kids! On the boat itself it is possible to have some food and drinks and you can sit on top of the deck and inside the boat. On the way back, you don’t have to show your ticket since you always have to buy a return ticket for the island.

Schiermonnikoog with kids #1: Renting bikes

If you are on Schiermonnikoog with kids, you should rent a bike! The island lends itself perfectly to exploring by bicycle. There are a number of providers who rent bikes, and we rented our bikes from Schiermonnikoog Bike Rental. This provider of rental bikes was waiting for us at the port when we arrived from the boat and where other tourists had to wait in line for some time, we were able to cycle away on our bikes right away. Really good service from this company. Even when we took the boat back, they were ready at the boat and we could drop them off right away and get on the boat like that.

For parents with kids, the company has a wide range of options. We had rented the cargo bike for Sophie, but you can also rent a child tandem (we did that on Ameland with our daughter ), a child seat on the back of the bike or a children’s bike. Just keep in mind that the wind can be quite strong on the Wadden Islands and that it can be quite heavy for kids to cycle by themselves.

In one day you can already see much of the island by bike. We cycled from the harbor toward the village of Schiermonnikoog and from there we cycled to the play forest. And then we cycled counterclockwise through the Wasserman bunker, through the northern beaches to the lighthouses and so back to the village of Schiermonnikoog. A nice round trip, which will take you a day if of course you stop at the various sights and grab an occasional cafe.

Schiermonnikoog with kids #2 Play forest Hazenweitje

Located just north of the village of Schiermonnikoog, Speelbos Hazenweitje is a fun play forest for kids to entertain themselves for an hour (or two). We have visited many play forests in northern Brabant and found this one to be a very nice one as well. The forest is spacious and when you arrive at the play forest you immediately have a very spacious field with picnic benches, a soccer field and a cable car. When we were there the sun was shining well and the forests made it quite windless (you don’t have that in so many places on the island ;)).

If you continue walking to the back of the forest, you will come across an area where children can play with a water pump and there is a kind of tree house where kids can play. In addition, you have some playground equipment made of wood. Especially when it’s nice and warm, this is a great place for kids to play in the woods.

After your kids have played in this play forest, it’s fun to bike down the trail a little further to Birch Lake. This is a 2-minute bike ride so you’ll be there in no time. At Birch Lake it is possible to have a drink on the terrace by the water. The Oerrr Foundation also installed a number of play elements at this pond. You’ll find a pull raft across the water to an island in Birch Lake and some other smaller play equipment. Together with the play forest, this is a great activity when visiting the island of Schiermonnikoog with kids!

Schiermonnikoog with kids #3: the village of Schiermonnikoog

The village of Schiermonnikoog is cozy and it is the largest place on the island. Not that it represents more than a few streets, but there are plenty of stores and cafes for some shopping and eating and drinking. When you get off the boat and drive into the village, you first pass the fun playground the Witte Winde. This playground has quite a bit of playground equipment (as you can see in the photos) and it’s a nice place to start when you get off the boat.

Another fun thing to do in the village of Schiermonnikoog is to stop by the tourist office in the village. In fact, the tourist office has set up a fun scavenger hunt (Lijtje Minsken) for the village’s smallest inhabitants. In this scavenger hunt, you are given a map and must look for dozens of dolls hidden in the village.

These dolls are very small and as big as your thumb. Therefore, it is very fun for kids to look for the dolls in a certain place. We found some of the dolls, but if you want to find all the dolls on the scavenger hunt, it will take half a day. Especially for slightly older kids, it is a great activity to do independently, while parents enjoy a drink on one of the terraces in the village.

Schiermonnikoog with kids #4: Visit the Wasserman Bunker

The island of Schiermonnikoog has several World War II bunkers, and there is even a bunker museum on the island. One of the coolest bunkers to visit on the island is bunker Wasserman located in the middle of the island. Especially for kids, it’s fun to climb and scramble at this bunker and explore its various underground spaces. Because the bunker is located on a hill, on top of the bunker you also have a beautiful view of the surroundings of Schiermonnikoog with kids!

Schiermonnikoog with kids: other activities

There are other things to do on Schiermonnikoog with kids. We still list the best activities here for you:

#5 Beaches: especially in the summer when it’s hot, you can visit the island’s beaches on Schiermonnikoog with kids just fine. The beaches are spacious and clean and there is little chance of the beach being crowded. When we were there it was still a little too chilly on the beach, but in the summer you can definitely add a few wonderful days on the beach here.

#6 Westerplas: If you and your kids enjoy bird watching with binoculars, the Westerplas is an ideal place to do so. There is a bird-watching hut on the water that has been declared the most beautiful place in the Netherlands. You can take beautiful walks on Schiermonnikoog anyway. Therefore, the island’s tourist office also organizes a hiking month on the island every November. In doing so, they set out various walks, such as the culinary walk on Schiermonnikoog.

#7 Taking workshops in an old city bus: during the vacations, it is possible for kids to take various workshops in an old city bus. Kids can get creative here using items they found on the beach, as well as drawing and painting. This old city bus can be found on the beach at post 3.

Where to stay in Schiermonnikoog with kids?

Because the island is not super large, the choice in terms of hotels with rooms for families is therefore not that great. You do have some hotels but there you cannot book rooms for a family of four and then you have to book multiple rooms. The only hotel where this is possible is Hotel Cafe Restaurant Duinzicht. Here it is possible to book a quadruple room.

Another fun option with kids is Landal Vitamaris. This vacation park has spacious apartments for families with children and also lots of facilities for families with kids, such as a playground, swimming pool and wellness. For apartments at Landal Vitamaris, take a look here.

We ourselves chose to take a day trip to Schiermonnikoog from Groningen, so we slept in the city of Groningen. We also wrote the Groningen with kids report on this. Of course, the selection here is a lot greater. If you want to see the range of hotels in the city of Groningen please click here.
