Scheveningen with kids

Visiting Scheveningen with kids is always a good idea in the summer, of course, but even in winter there is enough entertainment to keep you entertained for a weekend for sure. Scheveningen is part of the family-friendly city of The Hague, and we already wrote the blog The Hague with kids, in which we included Scheveningen as a city activity. We visited Scheveningen in both summer and winter and based on these visits, we list the best activities in Scheveningen with kids.

What to do in Scheveningen with kids

#1 The Pier

The Pier has been the figurehead of Scheveningen for decades, and in recent years it has received a major renovation. Several catering establishments have been added and there are also several things for kids to do on the Pier. Surely the most famous activity here is a spin on the white Ferris wheel.

Scheveningen with kids

This Ferris wheel is 50 meters high and has 36 air-conditioned enclosed gondolas, including one VIP gondola with a glass bottom. A ride on the Ferris wheel takes about ten minutes, and you have a view of all of The Hague from the Ferris wheel. What we do find quite pricey is the price for a ride. That one is pretty hefty especially if you go with the whole family.

Also on the Pier is a small indoor playground called Play & Bounce, which is open to kids up to 10 years old. Here you have eight trampolines and four side trampolines as well as a small play area with climbing blocks, large soft Lego building blocks, a ball pit and slides.

You can buy tickets for a specific time here. We had bought a ticket for half an hour and expected that to be more than enough, but we really had to go get our daughter after half an hour and tell her that time was up.

You can also take surf lessons with kids 365 days a year at a surf school located on the Pier in Scheveningen. You can also bungee jump on the Pier, but you must be at least 18 years old to do so. You can also slide down a 350-meter zipline here with kids. Kids must weigh at least 30 to 35 pounds (exactly how much weight depends on the wind strength that day).

If you are looking for a spectacular activity in Scheveningen with kids then you should go ziplining on the pier. This is the longest zipline in all of Europe and you will reach speeds of more than 70 kilometers per hour during your trip.

We found this a very cool experience so with the family. You go from the bungee jump tower down a 350-meter line and come out on the other side of the pier. Meanwhile, you pass the Ferris wheel and fly over the beach and sea, as it were. Really very cool to do!

For more information on this ziplining, check out Zip Holland’s website. By the way, you can do another spectacular activity here and that is bungee jumping. In fact, as a parent, you can do a duo jump with your kid from the Bungy Tower.

#2 Legoland Discovery Center

You can also go to Legoland in Scheveningen with kids. Legoland is located on the boulevard of Scheveningen, near the Kurhaus and, of course, everything here is all about Lego. We visited Legoland on a Saturday morning right when the doors opened and visited the two 4d movies in the cinema first. We liked these films (which lasted about 15 minutes each) mostly because of the special effects.

In the middle on the floor where Legoland is located, portions of the city of The Hague have been recreated and kids can use different buttons to put things into action. So you can make the windmills turn their sails, make a dog bark and score a ball in the ADO Den Haag stadium. You also have a little attraction in Legoland where you have to destroy things in a cart with some kind of magic wand.

You also have a ninja testing center, where kids have to run a course, avoiding hitting the laser beams. In doing so, they can adjust the level of difficulty themselves.

For the rest, kids here can mostly build a lot with Lego. For example, you can build a car from Lego and test it out on a track, and you can build a tall tower from Lego and test it to see if it can take a beating. Especially building a car and testing it on a track was something our daughter really enjoyed doing. It is also possible to attend workshops on Lego.

We had seen it after two hours, but if your kids love Lego, I’m sure they can enjoy themselves longer in here. Count on a maximum of half a day for this activity in Scheveningen with kids. In retrospect, we found that for the two hours we spent inside, the entrance fee was a bit on the high side for the whole family.

#3 Escaperoom Unlock Scheveningen

We as a family love escaperooms. We always find this a very fun activity to play together as a family. In Scheveningen you can play a fun escaperoom at Escaperoom Unlock Scheveningen. This escaperoom is located in the center of Scheveningen and we walked there from the boulevard.

You have several fun escaperooms to play here and we played the Mission Impossible escaperoom, as it is for kids as young as 10 and our daughter was also 10 when we played this escaperoom. Our daughter always finds it exciting and we try to involve her as much as possible in all the tasks we have to do in the rooms.

What to do in Scheveningen with the family

Also in this escaperoom, we end up in several rooms and have to complete several tasks. In the end, we manage to break out of the room after 58 minutes. We had a maximum of an hour, so that was right on time.

We really thought it was a super fun escaperoom and all three of us enjoyed it immensely. Of course, this is also a fun activity to do in Scheveningen when the weather is not so good. For more information about the different escaperooms, take a look at Unlock Scheveningen‘s website.

#4 Sea Life

You can also visit a branch of Sea Life in Scheveningen with kids. Sea Life Scheveningen is located on the promenade near the Legoland Discovery Center and therefore you can easily combine these two children’s activities in Scheveningen. You can also buy a combination ticket with a discount for Sea Life and Legoland Scheveningen.

We visit Sea Life in Scheveningen during the winter period and our daughter gets a scavenger hunt right upon entering. In Sea Life are in fact several Lego buildings hidden that the kids have to find. This scavenger hunt is in connection with the Pirate Weeks which are when we visit Sea Life with our daughter. Our daughter always likes this kind of scavenger hunt and immediately starts searching fanatically.

Children's outing Scheveningen

We visit the different aquariums with all different marine animals. There are different feeding times in Sea Life and just as we enter, the Pacus are being fed. We are first explained about the animals and then we all get to throw pieces of fruit into the water for the animals.

Sea Life is also very much geared toward kids. For example, Sea Life has a play corner for kids, kids can make a drawing and scan it so it can be seen on a screen, and there is another scavenger hunt you can do in Sea Life. We found the highlight of Sea Life to be the big tunnel, where the sharks, rays and turtles swim above your head. So cool to see these animals swim by at such close range.

We spent a total of a little over an hour and a half in Sea Life and had a great time! Of course, this is also a great activity if the weather is a little less and you still want to do something in Scheveningen with the family. Check out Sea Life’ s website for more information on tickets, feeding times and the activities available.

#5 To the musical

You can also go to the musical in Scheveningen with kids. The AFAS Circustheater is a few minutes’ walk from the Kurhaus, and in recent years, plenty of well-known musicals such as The Lion King, Tarzan, Mary Poppins and Wicked have been held here. Especially with older kids, it’s definitely fun to visit a musical here in Scheveningen.

Still, there are occasional performances for younger kids. These have included performances by Fireman Sam, Ernst, Bobbie and the rest and Peppa Pig. Kids can snack with a glass of lemonade during the performances, and booster seats are available in the theater for young children.

Our daughter went to see the musical Frozen here and she loved it. So be sure to check when booking a vacation to Scheveningen with kids if there is a fun musical on the schedule.

Family-friendly hotel Scheveningen

We went to Scheveningen several times in a day trip with our daughter, but we also stayed overnight in Scheveningen once. We did this in an apartment near the beach in Scheveningen. This apartment had free parking and no less than 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. We were a 5-minute walk from this apartment to Sea Life Scheveningen and the Pier.

This apartment was very spacious and also had a living room, a dining room and a kitchen. In short, enormous space and close to the beach. So we found it a very nice apartment to stay in Scheveningen.

Tips Scheveningen with kids

Transportation to Scheveningen

Of course, most families with kids come to Scheveningen for the beach. This beach is also easily accessible by public transportation from The Hague. In less than fifteen minutes we were on the Scheveningen boulevard by streetcar from The Hague central station. You can catch streetcar nine for this. Or you can take buses 21, 22 or 23 and get off at the Kurhaus stop.

By the way, we visited Scheveningen several times by car and you have plenty of parking lots around the beaches, where you can park your car. In Scheveningen itself, you can walk along the boulevard just fine.
