Best travel time Pretoria with kids

You can visit the city of Pretoria with kids all year round. In the months of June, July and August, however, it can be very chilly as it is winter in South Africa and the temperature is between 10 and 20 degrees. In the months of November, December, January and February, it is summer in Pretoria and temperatures rise toward the 30-degree mark. One disadvantage of this period, however, is that it rains more days then.

The months between summer and winter are actually the best months to visit the city. It does not rain as much then and the temperature is still very good. These are the months of April, May, September and October.

Transportation to Pretoria

Most families with kids who tour South Africa do so by rental car. You can use public transportation in South Africa, but especially with kids, it’s not ideal. You are often on the road a lot longer and have much less freedom than you would with a rental car.

Children’s activities Pretoria

#1 Pretoria Zoo

You can take kids to the zoo in Pretoria. The National Zoological Garden (as the zoo is officially called) is located in the center of the city of Pretoria and you can spot most of Africa’s large animals here such as the elephant, giraffe, buffalo, rhino, zebra and crocodile. The zoo is quite large and it is possible to rent a golf cart to ride through the zoo with your kids that way.

In terms of food and drink, this zoo is not in the best shape and there are few options to choose from. It is better to bring your own food and drink for the family. You need about half a day to see all the animals, so you can also choose to visit the zoo in the morning and then have lunch somewhere else or visit the zoo after lunch.

#2 Croc City and Reptile Park

A half-hour drive from Pretoria is the Croc City and Reptile Park. The main animal you can spot here is the crocodile. So you have a lot of those here at this destination. There is education about these crocodiles and you can also admire other reptiles in this park such as different species of snakes.

The park is not super big, but because of the education, you still have entertainment here for a few hours. The animal caretakers can tell a lot about the animals. Kids here can also have their picture taken with different snakes and also with a baby crocodile. Of course, you have to weigh for yourself whether you should want to do that with wild animals.

For kids, ziplining across a small lake with crocodiles is fun. Very exciting for kids! You do pay an additional fee for this activity here. There is also a restaurant at the center with several options for kids such as pizza, for example. There is also a playground for kids on site.

#3 Rietvlei Nature Reserve

You can drive your own rental car here and in a few hours you will have seen the park. You drive on paved roads here and you have a chance to spot zebra, buck, rhino and cheetah in this park. The park has a small coffee shop, where you can have a great lunch. However, this coffee shop is closed on Mondays. You can also picnic or bbq here around the large lake near the park.

The entrance fee to the park is not too high, making the price-quality ratio of the park very good. Especially if you are with young kids, this can be an ideal nature park to visit for a few hours and spot animals.

#4 Bounce

If your kids want to burn some energy, this trampoline park is a good option. Bounce’s trampoline park is located just outside the city center about 15 minutes away by car. You have several trampolines here and also a climbing wall, where the kids can climb. They also have a Supertramp here, which is the largest trampoline in South Africa.

There is also an area with blocks, where kids can build. You can pay hourly admission for your kids here. Usually an hour (or 2) is all you need at this type of trampoline park. This is also a great children’s activity in Pretoria when the weather is not so good.

#5 Zita Park

A fun park to visit in Pretoria with kids is Zita Park. Zita Park is located slightly outside the center and you drive to it in about 20 minutes. Zita Park has playgrounds in the park and also a swimming pool with a fun slide. So be sure to bring your swimwear if you are visiting this park with kids.

The park has many grassy areas, making it a great place for family picnics as well. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. You pay a small entrance fee to visit the park, which also means there are no bums in the park. Therefore, you can very well take a walk through the park. It is possible to go to the restroom in the park.

Another place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city is Pretoria’s botanical garden. These gardens are also located slightly outside the city center about 15 minutes away by car. You pay a few euros entrance fee per person here and this is a beautiful park with teahouse, waterfall, beautiful hiking trails and endless grassy fields. On weekends, this place is very busy with locals going for picnics in the park.
