Playing Gilze with kids: the play forest
We must honestly say that we live near this play forest and had never heard of it until a year or two ago. After a tip from friends, we were quite curious as to what to imagine a play forest to be. By now we know better and know that it is a fun way for kids (and parents) to play in nature. So you see more and more play forests springing up in the Netherlands.
The play forest is located near the van der Valk hotel Gilze-Tilburg. It is possible to park your car there, but the play forest itself also has a fairly large parking lot (address: Nerhoven 12 in Gilze). The story surrounding the play forest is that of a mysterious female giant. The forest belongs to her and kids can also find traces of her in the forest such as wooden footprints. You will also find games and questions asked by the giantess along the way. The play forest is for kids up to age 12.
Throughout the forest are several pieces of playground equipment, where kids can climb and clamber. There is also a water pump, where kids can play with water. Still, it is beautiful every time to see what volunteers can make from dead trees from the forest. Beautiful figures carved from the wood. There is even a kind of xylophone made of wood that kids can make music on.
If you get a little further into the forest, you also get a little more into an open plain. There are also several picnic benches here, where families can get something to eat and drink. Here we also find a natural maze, a couple of insect hotels and a cable car. We only saw later that a family had a scavenger hunt through the play forest and she told us that you could download this scavenger hunt from the play forest website. Take a look at the website here to download and print it out if necessary. Had we known this, we definitely would have printed it out and used it.
Gilze play forest with kids: food and drink
You can also grab a bite to eat and a drink with kids at the Gilze Play Forest. In fact, at the van der Valk Hotel Gilze-Tilburg it is possible to have something to eat inside or outside. Near the outdoor terrace of this restaurant is also a small playground, where your kids can play. By the way, this playground is open to everyone.
It is possible in this restaurant to order a pizza, hamburger, a croquette sandwich or a bouncer, as well as some more luxurious dishes such as, for example, a sole. For kids, you can also order a simple sandwich here with jam, peanut butter or sprinkles or a children’s soup. Of course, it is also possible to just have a drink on the terrace if the weather is a bit nice, while the kids play in the playground.
Gilze play forest with kids: foot golfing
Next to the Gilze play forest is an open area with a lake of sorts, where foot golf is played. This activity is great fun for kids who love playing soccer. In all, you have 18 different holes here, where you have to get a soccer ball into a large hole within a number of shots. We have done this ourselves several times now here and this is also a very fun activity for kids. Therefore, you will see many families doing this activity here in Gilze.
Especially when the sun is shining, this is a pleasant activity to do with your kids together. It is also possible to have a drink at this course and the terrace of restaurant van der Valk Gilze-Tilburg overlooks this golf course, so you can also have something to eat with the family here.
You do spend an hour or two to three with this activity, depending on how big the group is. And it’s a great combination with a visit to Gilze Play Forest with kids. For more information on pricing, hours of operation and how to make a reservation, check out the footgolf course’s website.
