Play forest Herperduin with kids: The play forest

To get to the play forest, it is best to type the address of pancake restaurant Pan&Zo into your navigation, since the large (free) parking lot of the play forest is opposite this restaurant. It is a spacious parking lot, which can get crowded on weekends. Then, in addition to families going to the play forest, there are also many people who go to play sports in the forest. We saw quite a few runners, mountain bikers and sports groups busy in the forest during our visit to the play forest. Next to the pancake restaurant is also right next to the entrance to the play forest.

At this entrance you will also find right away a map of the area, despite everything being pretty self-explanatory. After a little walk through the woods, we see the big playground equipment and our daughter scurries away. The playground equipment is beautifully made and very fun. It is fairly high and kids can climb in and on it four or five ways. In the middle is a large fast slide, which also ensures that kids have to climb up again and again and can do so in a different way each time.

Our daughter sat on her coat to gain extra speed in the slide, which caused her quite a bit of hilarity. Near the playground equipment is also a pool of water with a water pump, where kids with booties on were playing around the water. With small kids, you have to be careful here that they don’t fall in completely. On that note, it’s wise to bring an extra set of clothes with young kids anyway.

Around the playground are several benches, where parents can sit. A few high chairs have also been made, which of course it is again fun for kids to climb on. The area around the large playground equipment also has some other playground equipment and some tubes for kids to crawl through. There is also a barefoot trail for young kids in the play forest.

The sign at the entrance says that the play forest is suitable for children ages six and up, and certainly the large playground equipment is still a bit high for very young children, but even so, younger kids can have a great time here too with the water and sand and the other climbing equipment. There are also two small slides for younger kids at the playground. That’s why we think the play forest is appropriate for kids of all ages anyway.

Just keep in mind that sometimes you share the play forest with people who are mountain biking, so sometimes you have to take a moment to warn your kids not to collide with one of these mountain bikers.

Playing forest Herperduin with kids: the Watch Tower

Walk a little further from the playground equipment, and you’ll soon reach the area’s fun (free) observation tower. This observation tower is 25 meters high and has seven staircases. This observation tower is also great to climb with small kids. At the top of the tower you have a magnificent view of the surrounding area. Just keep in mind that it can be quite chilly on the tower and it can be quite windy upstairs.

Around this watchtower you have a fairly large open plain with very fine beach sand. It reminded us a bit of the Loonse and Drunense dunes, which are also great for playing and hiking with kids and which we also included in our blog about the most beautiful walks in Brabant with kids. Here, too, we saw many families with kids running around with shovels and buckets and playing in the sand.

There are also quite a few trees in this area for kids to climb. Our daughter always loves that and then has to climb every tree. In addition, quite a few cabins were built in this stretch. In short, also a great place to let your kids play in the summer while you yourself sit on a rug you brought from home. Therefore, you can have a great picnic here with the family in the sand.

Play forest Herperduin with kids: the further environment

From the watchtower you can cross the open plain and find another fitness trail with all kinds of exercises. Certainly some of the exercises are fun for kids to play and climb. For example, there is an exercise that involves hanging from a rope and climbing over something as an athlete. This trim trail was mostly used by kids to play there when we were there.

For families who love hiking, you can also have great walks through the forest around the Herperduin Play Forest with kids. You have two different lakes located in the area (Ganzenven and Klompven), which you can walk to and which are great for lounging by the water, especially in the summer. Consequently, there are several hiking trails here to these fens.

For example, from nature gate the Kriekeput, you have a six-kilometer hiking trail along the two different fens. There is also a hike for kids and that is the Osje hiking trail. This is a walking trail that is 1.5 kilometers long where kids can complete assignments along the way. The starting point of this route is at nature playground the Klauterwoud, which is eight minutes away by car from the parking lot of the play forest Herperduin.

Nevertheless, you can also walk from the observation tower to the start of this hike and it will take you about half an hour. Getting there and back will take about an hour, but if you stop at the two fens several times along the way, it’s doable with kids. You then actually walk this hike the other way around.
