Ouwehands Zoo Review: review of the zoo!

Ouwehands Zoo had been on our list of things to visit for a long time and during spring break it was finally here! We spent a whole day at this very cool and family-friendly zoo and viewed the entire zoo. Following this visit to Ouwehands Dierenpark, we write this review in which we provide all the information you need to spend a day at this zoo.

General information

We drove early on Sunday morning from Brabant to Rhenen, arriving around a quarter to ten at the zoo, which opens at ten. We always like to visit a zoo right at opening time because it is still nice and quiet. We park the car in the paid parking lot next to the zoo. From there you can walk to the zoo entrance in two minutes.

You can buy tickets in advance through Ouwehands Dierenpark’s website, which also means you won’t have to stand in line at the box office. We had also printed out the maps in advance, so after the park opened, we were in the zoo within a minute. At checkout, we were given a map of the zoo so we could get our bearings. Our daughter also always enjoys ticking off on the map the animals she has seen at the zoo.

The zoo

The zoo has a huge variety of animals. For example, the zoo has some great spectacular animals such as the elephant, the white lion (very special), the Amur tiger, the polar bear, the brown bear, the giraffe, the zebra, the ostrich and a lot of different types of monkeys such as the gorilla, the orangutan and the Barbary ape.

There are also dozens of smaller animals such as the penguin, the koala, the wolf and also a lot of different birds such as the flamingo, the vulture and the pelican. In addition, this animal park also has a beautiful aquarium with lots of different kinds of tropical fish and jellyfish and also a terrarium with snakes, turtles and special frogs. You can get very close to some animals like the iguanas that roam freely and, of course, the animals from the petting zoo, which also have a place in this zoo.

Surely the highlight of the zoo is the panda bear. These panda bears are in a very beautiful setting, where you feel like you are in China. We really loved seeing these beautiful animals in real life. Very special. To view all these animals at leisure, you already need more than half a day. We always love monkeys and you have many different species here, so we are always observing them for quite a while.

Children’s Activities

What makes this zoo so fun for families with children is that there is also a huge amount to do for kids. For example, you have a very cool area inside where kids can play on all kinds of playground equipment. Here they can also play with sand and water and walk in a scary space. The advantage for parents is that they can also grab a bite to eat and a drink here. When we visited the zoo there were occasional showers and this was the ideal place for our daughter to have fun. This section is called RavotAapja and is an indoor play jungle.

In addition, there was also a large outdoor playground in this part of the animal park. We can imagine that if it was better we could have had a very good time here too. In addition, throughout the zoo you have various play equipment for the kids, where they can climb and clamber. For example, at the gorilla inside, you also have a whole section where kids can climb and slide down the slide.

Our daughter also enjoyed doing the Academy scavenger hunt. Here, kids have to answer all kinds of questions and collect letters, which they can use to form a word. Upon completion, they receive a diploma. There is also another fun show that you can go to that involves searching for the NEMO fish and lots of singing and dancing.

There is also a show with sea lions, only we did not visit it ourselves. Even if your kids don’t like watching animals, there are plenty of other things for kids to do at this zoo.

Food and drink

As for food and drink, there are plenty of options at this animal park. For example, at nine different spots in the park you have a catering facility or restaurant where you can get something to eat and drink. We ourselves started the day with a cup of coffee and cake in the indoor play jungle and at noon we had lunch at the Jungle Restaurant. Here they had plenty of tasty choices.

At the panda bears, it is also possible to eat an Asian meal. You can eat at various places in the zoo both indoors and outdoors. There are also several places in between where you can buy something to drink and a candy. Of course, it is also possible to bring your own food and drinks.

Conclusion

We really enjoyed our visit to this zoo. We were there slightly before the zoo opened and left the zoo by closing time. Because the weather was not super good, we made less use of the playground equipment that was outside, but if our daughter had played there as well, we might have run out of time. Especially with kids, this zoo is also fun to visit! For more information on opening hours, admission prices and the different animals, take a look at Ouwehands Dierenpark‘s website.
