Oisterwijk woods and fens with kids: the play forest
To get to Oisterwijkse bossen en vennen with kids by car, enter the address Van Tienhovenlaan 4 in Oisterwijk into your navigation. You can park your car in a large parking lot near the forest (it can get crowded by noon in summer) and then walk to the Oisterwijk Woods and Fens Visitor Center in a few minutes. From here you can take walks to the fens and also to the play forest.
We have also included this play forest in our list of best play forests in Brabant with kids. The Oisterwijk Play Forest can be found behind the visitor center of the Oisterwijk Woods and Fens and was created by the Oerrr Foundation. These maintain the play forest and they ask non-members for a voluntary contribution of 1.50 euros for the maintenance of the forest. You can pick up an admission ticket at the visitor center. The play forest is not super big, but for kids, the logs, small lake and water pumps are enough entertainment to keep them entertained for an hour or two.
For kids up to four years old, there is a separate area in the play forest, where there is a sandbox and a small log trail. The play forest doesn’t have super much playground equipment, but it does have enough logs and wood to keep you well entertained. Across the water are several logs and kids can reach the other side of the water via the log and ropes. Keep in mind that kids can get wet, so an extra set of clothes is not a luxury. The play forest is also accessible to kids in wheelchairs.
Near the play forest is also restaurant Groot Speijk, where you can have a great family lunch inside and outside on the terrace at noon. In front of this restaurant there is also an open plain (grassy field) and a small playground (large swing, slide and climbing frame), where a lot of soccer and games are played by kids. For more information about the play forest, take a look at Natuurmonumenten’s website.
Oisterwijk woods and fens with kids: hiking
From the visitor center you can take several beautiful walks through the Oisterwijk woods and fens with kids. It depends a bit on how old your kids are and approximately how many miles they can walk, which route you choose. Almost all hiking trails do pass one or more fens in the forest. These fens are beautiful and our daughter also climbs various trees frequently along the way. It is also possible to sit along the water’s edge at a number of fens.
This way, it is also a great place to have a family picnic somewhere along the waterfront. The different routes are well marked with different colors, so there is no chance that you will go wrong. We have also included the walks through the Oisterwijk woods and hikes in our list of most beautiful walks in North Brabant with kids.
What we find a great route to walk (we have walked it several times) is the yellow Goorven route. This route is 4.5 kilometers long and passes several lakes. We usually take an hour or two on this route, since our daughter often climbs trees and plays by the water during the hike. This route is just enough for our five-year-old daughter. Especially if we stop to play several times in between. If you have smaller kids, there are also shorter routes you can hike. You can also follow several routes with a wheelchair.
Oisterwijk woods and fens with kids: biking
From the parking lot at the visitor center, it is about a ten-minute car ride to Pete Fun . Piet Plezier is a very familiar name in the region and has been renting family bikes for decades. When we were young ourselves, we used to go here with our parents to play miniature golf and ride bikes. At Pete Fun there is a spacious parking lot where you can park your car.
At Pete Fun, there is plenty for kids to do. Nice is to rent bikes. You then ride a route through the Oisterwijk woods and fens. Halfway along the bike trail, you’ll also arrive back at the Forest Visitors Center. We spent about two hours biking this route, stopping at the visitor center for a drink along the way.
What is fun to do after your bike ride is to have a drink at regional restaurant the Drie Vennen. This is a minute’s walk from Pete Fun and you also have a kind of natural playground outside with water, a slide and various natural climbing equipment. For us, this was a wonderful end to the day, having a drink outside on the terrace here and our daughter was playing in this nature playground.
This way, in the area of the Oisterwijk woods and fens with kids, you can have a great time for a whole day if you start in the climbing forest, then go for a hike, have lunch at the visitor center and in the afternoon rent bikes from Piet Plezier and then finish with a drink at the nature playground. Success guaranteed in nice weather!
Oisterwijk woods and fens with kids: food and drink
As we mentioned, you can have a great meal at the visitor center of the Oisterwijkse bossen en vennen nature reserve with kids. Still, you have some nice restaurants nearby with a nice playground for the kids in the Oisterwijk area.
The Forest Cafe: at this cafe we may have been dozens of times when our daughter was about three/four years old. The café has an excellent terrace, where you can have a great lunch and play equipment that is just right for young kids, especially. The terrace actually surrounds the playground, giving you a good view of your kids.
The Gerrithoeve: from Piet Plezier you can get here by car in three minutes. Kids can play both indoors and outdoors here. There is a slide and several pieces of playground equipment. There is also fine beach sand, where kids can play in the sand. You also have go-karts and a cable car in the outdoor playground.
The Reuselhoeve: our daughter climbed here in the Reuselhoeve’s climbing forest. They have two different sections of the climbing forest here. A section for children under 130 cm and for kids and adults over 130 cm. For all ages, this climbing forest is totally awesome!
Our daughter really enjoyed having her first climbing experience and walked the route several times (including with a blindfold). There is also a playground next to it and a large trampoline for the kids. Kids can also play paintball there. When we were there, there were several children’s parties at the Reuselhoeve. It is also possible to rent a canoe with the family here.
Pancake House the Discovery: this restaurant also has all kinds of things to do with kids besides eating. There is an indoor playground with climbing equipment, slide, XBOX Kinect and a dance floor. Outside there is also a playground with swings, a giant slide, seesaws, a bike square and trampolines. There is also a soccer field where soccer can be played.
