How to get there from toronto canada with kids?

From the city of Toronto, it is about 1.5 hours’ drive by rental car to the falls. We visited the falls this way from Toronto. The advantage of a rental car is that it is a lot cheaper than an organized tour. Plus, with a rental car, you have the freedom to stay as long as you want, you don’t have to stop along the way for wine tasting (which most tours offer) and you can stop along the way whenever you want. This is convenient with kids who need to pee regularly.

Tip: are you going to rent a car for this trip and want to know what to look out for in a rental car click here.

If you do prefer to take an organized tour to the falls from Toronto, there are several organizations that offer this:

Most tours are full-day, and many of the companies stop for wine tasting along the way. Be sure to check what is included in the price of each tour. Here there may still be differences between different organizations.

Where is the best place to view the three waterfalls in Canada and the US?

Horseshoe Falls

The Horseshoe Falls are best viewed from the Niagara Parkway in Canada, south of the Rainbow Bridge. You can also admire the falls well from Table Rock. On the American side, you can visit the falls via Goat Island.

American Falls

The American Falls are best viewed from the Niagara Parkway in the Canadian section of the falls and from the American section from Prospect Point or Luna Island. From the United States, though, you can get the closest to the waterfall itself.

Bridal Veil Falls

The Bridal Veil Falls are best seen from the American section of Niagara Falls, and from Luna Island you can even get to the edge of the falls.

Activities around the falls?

Boat ride. With kids, it’s obviously fun to visit the falls in an active way. For example, we visited the waterfalls by boat. This boat goes very close to the falls and you really get soaking wet from the water coming off the falls. However, everyone entering the boat will be given a poncho in a certain color.

The boat taking to the water from the American side is the
Maid of the Mist
and from the Canadian side this is the Hornblower. Boats leave almost every 15 minutes, especially in the summer months. When we wanted to book tickets for the boat there was a long line. If you want to avoid this, you can
buy tickets online in advance

White Water Walk. In this activity, you walk along the waterfall. An elevator takes you 70 meters down to then walk on a boardwalk along the Niagara River. Here you can see the waterfall up close.

Journey behind the Falls. This activity gets you even closer to the waterfall, than with the White Water Walk. An elevator takes you down about 45 meters, only to arrive at the side of Horshoe Falls via a tunnel. There are 2 observation points that take you very close to the falls. There’s also a good chance you’ll get pretty wet here.

Tips for visiting the falls:

If you want to see the falls from both Canada and the U.S., you can walk from one country to the other via the Rainbow Bridge. Be aware that you are crossing a border and need to arrange visas for both countries (ETA and ESTA). Bring your passport, too, of course.

When you take a boat right past the falls, despite your poncho, you get soaking wet standing on the deck. You can take shelter at the bottom of the boat, though, if you don’t want to get all wet.

All the major American fast food chains are represented in this town. We had dinner at the Rainforest café. This restaurant is all dressed up inside in Jungle Style.
