The 10 most beautiful places in Iceland with kids!

The 10 most beautiful places in Iceland with kids!

In this blog Iceland with kids, we have compiled a top 10 of the most beautiful places we have visited in this beautiful country. We took a beautiful tour of Iceland with our seven-year-old daughter and were impressed by all the beautiful scenery we encountered along the way. In that respect, Iceland is a top country to visit with kids. It is safe, clean, not too hot and there is enough to see to keep you busy for at least a week. We list below the 10 most beautiful places in Iceland with kids.

#1 Blue Lagoon

Iceland is known for its many spas and lagoons, and surely the most famous of these lagoons is the Blue Lagoon. This is perhaps the most famous sight in all of Iceland. We hesitated for a very long time (partly because of the price) whether to visit the Blue Lagoon, but it is absolutely a wonderful place to visit.

The lagoon has beautiful blue water and, of course, is wonderfully warm. In the lagoon itself you can put all kinds of masks on your face for free, and it is also possible to have a drink in the water. The Blue Lagoon is about a 45-minute drive from the capital city of Reykjavik and is very close to the airport. Because of this, you even see tourists who are transferring at the airport come to relax at this spa for a few hours.

So keep in mind that this is a popular spot and the lagoon can be very crowded. Therefore, it is advisable to book in advance, as you have a high chance that in high season everything is fully booked. We wrote about the Blue Lagoon the extensive blog Blue Lagoon with kids.

#2 Reykjavik

Iceland’s capital Reykjavik is definitely fun to visit with kids. For most tourists, it is where the round trip starts and where the round trip ends. Reykjavik can be compared to a large village, and in most places in the city you can park for free. Fun things to do in Reykjavik with kids include Perlan, Flyover Iceland and swimming pool Laugardalslaug.

The museum Perlan is all about the nature of Iceland, and they even have an entire cave made of ice in the museum that is meters long. Here you can sit on a chair made of ice and walk around a corridor system. At Flyover Iceland, you sit in a sort of 4d simulator and take a flight over Iceland. You get into the different areas and the smell and wind make it seem like you are really in the particular place.

If you are looking for a nice swimming pool in Reykjavik, Laugardalslaug is a nice option. Laugardalslaug is Iceland’s largest swimming pool and has a heated outdoor pool. You have several hot springs here and also a really cool slide. In addition, it is fun to take a tour of downtown Reykjavik. Here you have the most catering establishments in the country. We wrote about the capital the blog Reykjavik with kids.

#3 Golden Circle

The Golden Circle should also not be missing from our list of the most beautiful places in Iceland with kids. Actually, the Golden Circle is not one beautiful place, but rather this route consists of perhaps ten beautiful places. You can drive this route in a day by rental car, but we recommend taking a nice two days with kids.

For example, on this route you have the national park Thingvellir, which is great for hiking with kids in a valley and where you can see a beautiful waterfall. Also on this route are two beautiful waterfalls worth visiting (Gulfoss and Faxafoss) and also a geyser that spouts hot water every few minutes. The crater Kerid is also worth a visit because of its beautiful colored water. Count all these places separately and you might be able to make a list of the 20 most beautiful places in Iceland with kids.

In between, it’s nice to relax at one of the several spas you’ll encounter along this route. It is even possible to chill out in a free hot spring in Reykjadalur. You may have to hike a bit for this first, but this trail is really beautiful. We list the eight most beautiful sights of this Golden Circle in our blog the Golden Circle with kids.

#4 Waterfalls in southern Iceland

In the south of Iceland, you have a number of beautiful waterfalls located near each other that you can of course visit. From Reykjavik it does take a few hours of driving, but if you are on a tour of Iceland you will probably pass it. In fact, here you have four waterfalls lying together with the names Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi, Skógafoss and Kvernufoss.

What’s nice about these different waterfalls is that you can walk under some of them. We cannot guarantee that you will stay completely dry then, but of course this is a fun activity to do with kids. Perhaps the most beautiful waterfall of this list is Kvernufoss, because it is a lot less touristy and it is really beautifully situated with lots of greenery around it.

You can easily visit all these waterfalls in a day, since they are all quite close to each other. We slept near one of these falls, which allowed us to see the falls on foot by late afternoon and it was already a lot quieter. By the way, make sure your kids are wearing something like a (rain) jacket, as otherwise it may be too cold afterwards. In fact, it usually does not get warmer than 15 degrees in the summer in Iceland.

#5 glacial lakes

Iceland’s glacial lakes also definitely belong in the list of the most beautiful places in Iceland with kids. We visited two places in Iceland where you had these lakes with large blocks of ice in the water. For example, we visited Jökulsarlon, where you have to walk a short distance from the parking lot to the beautiful lake.

The ice blocks wash ashore here and kids obviously really enjoy playing with the ice blocks and lifting them. This spot is very photogenic, and it is also possible to take a boat out on the water and take a closer look at the larger ice blocks. However, you do need to be on time for this during high season, as these boat tours sell out quickly.

The second place we visited was Diamond Beach. This dark volcanic beach has black sand and along with the large ice blocks, it gives an idea if there are all diamonds on the beach. Here the ice blocks that had washed ashore were even a lot larger than at Jökulsarlon. By the way, you can also spot seals in the water here. When we were there, we saw several of them.

#6 DC-3 Airplane Wreck

Ok, this may not belong in the list of most beautiful places in Iceland with kids, but it is a special place. The DC-3 plane wreck is known from the program Who is the Mole, but Justin Bieber also recorded a music video here. That’s right downside, though, as this has become increasingly popular.

Whereas in the past you had to search for exactly where the spot was and where exactly to park your car on the side of the road, nowadays it is simply a paid parking lot. You walk from this parking lot to the wreck in about three quarters of an hour. Nowadays, you can take a bus toward the plane wreck even during the peak season.

Still, the place remains photogenic, and when we visited the wreck, the number of tourists was not too bad. If you want to have the wreck largely to yourself, it is recommended that you walk to the wreck with your kids very early in the morning, for example. By the way, the route that goes through an open plain can be very cold in winter with the wind.

#7 Halsanefshellir

Halsanefshellir is also a sight that definitely belongs in the most beautiful places in Iceland with kids. This is mainly because of the basalt formation that is beautiful. Kids can enjoy climbing on the rocks here and you can also have a great time sitting against one of the rocks.

You also have several caves here that you can enter and the beach has a beautiful dark sand color. Part of the Game of Thrones series was also shot on this site. Again, you can practically park your car at the beach and this parking is free. From the parking lot, it is then a short walk to the beach.

Because most of the sights in this list of the most beautiful places in Iceland with kids are within walking distance of parking lots, it is also doable with small kids. You just have to make sure the kids are dressed warmly, as it is often quite chilly in Iceland. Even in the summer months.

#8 Skaftafell national park

Iceland has only a few national parks, and one of these national parks is Vatnajökull. You can take wonderful walks here with your kids, and one of these walks is to the Skaftafell waterfall. This is perhaps the most beautiful waterfall we have seen in Iceland with our daughter.

From the parking lot, it is about a half-hour to three-quarters of an hour hike to this waterfall. The waterfall is so beautiful because of the basalt formations you can admire here. Together with the waterfall, this ensures that Skaftafell should not be missing from our list of the most beautiful places in Iceland with kids.

By the way, you can do more hiking here if you like hiking. Thus, you can take another much larger hike from this waterfall through the national park and it is also possible to walk toward a glacier in this area. We like to hike for an hour, but then our daughter is often ready for it, so the hike to this waterfall was just long enough.

#9 Dyrhólaey

One place to spot Iceland’s national bird is the Dyrhólaey viewpoint. This attraction in our list of the most beautiful places in Iceland with kids is great to combine with the attraction Halsanefshellir. In fact, you can walk all the way up to the viewpoint, but you can also, like what we did, take the car and drive up the stretch.

At the viewpoint, you have a beautiful view of the coast with its black beaches and the further surroundings. You can also spot dozens of puffins sitting among the rocks in the grass here. This bird does resemble a penguin, but unlike the penguin, it can fly. By the way, these critters can be found on souvenirs everywhere in Iceland.

This sight does not take up a lot of time, as you will have seen it fairly quickly. By the way, a number of these sights are located around the town of Vik, and we would recommend booking an overnight stay in this village as well. Vik is a fine town with a few restaurants, a supermarket and a fine swimming pool with hot tubs.

#10 Fjadrárgljúfur

The last attraction in our list of the most beautiful places in Iceland with kids is Fjadrárgljúfur. This beautiful gorge lies a bit in between the other sights and is fun to visit. In fact, you can take a beautiful hike through the green canyon here.

It is possible to walk through the gorge as well as walk along the top, and we did the latter. Because you are above the gorge you also have beautiful views of the gorge and several waterfalls and you also have several vantage points. This hike is great to do with kids and you can make the hike as long as you want.

And with this gorge we come to the end of our list of most beautiful places in Iceland with kids. Of course, there are many more beautiful places in Iceland and we obviously did not see everything. We stayed mainly in the south of the island and in total we traveled through Iceland for eight days. For us, that was also more than enough to see a lot of the country’s beauty already!

Where to stay in Iceland with kids?

Sleeping in Iceland is not cheap! We spent quite a long time looking for suitable accommodations for our family of three.

In the capital city of Reykjavik, we slept for three nights. From here we also visited the Golden Circle and we slept here at hotel Muli. This was a fine hotel just a little outside the city center, where we could park the car in front for free. We had a fine room and downstairs at the hotel there was a place to eat and warm up food. There is a large supermarket a few minutes’ walk from the hotel and we found it a pleasant place to sleep. For more information about this hotel check here.

For a list of all accommodations in Reykjavik, take a look here.

We spent the other days in Iceland in various accommodations that were not super nice to us. If we had to do it again now, we would definitely stay overnight in the town of Vik on the way, as there are a few more facilities there and that would be handy with kids anyway. Now we were often in accommodation, where it was still a half-hour drive to, say, a restaurant or a supermarket.

For a list of all accommodations in Vik, take a look here.
