Schwerin is the capital of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and this is a fun place to visit with kids. The city’s most famous landmark is Schwerin Castle. You can visit the castle and English audio is available. The castle’s rooms look beautiful inside, but your kids have to love this. The gardens surrounding the castle are especially beautiful and, especially with the lake surrounding the castle, very photogenic.
The gardens are quite large and you can have an excellent walk here. In summer, there are also a number of air cushions in the gardens for the kids. At the castle, it is also possible to ride a pedal boat around the castle and admire the castle from the water. A tour boat also departs from here, sailing different routes across Lake Schweriner See.
From the castle it is a short walk to the old town of Schwerin. A must in downtown Schwerin is visiting Schwerin Cathedral. In this cathedral, you can climb the tower and have a beautiful view of the city and Schwerin Castle. To climb the 220 stairs, the whole family pays only a few euros.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with kids #2: Rostock Zoo
One of the more fun activities to do in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with kids is to go to the zoo in Rostock. You can easily spend a whole day here, as the zoo is quite large and has many different animals. The zoo actually consists of three different parts. You have the old part of the zoo, a part that was added later (these two parts are connected by a tunnel) and there is an indoor part called Darwineum.
This last section is indoors and in this section you can get information about the theory of evolution, kids can get involved in an interactive way and there is also a large indoor enclosure (tropical hall) of different species of monkeys here. Why this zoo is also very suitable for kids, because of the number of playgrounds present throughout the zoo. In all, you have five different playgrounds at the zoo.
The zoo has many large animals such as the elephant, zebra, lion, hippo and polar bear. There is also a petting zoo of sorts at the zoo where kids can feed and pet the animals. At different times, different animals are fed. You can find the times for this on the zoo’s website.
In all five continents into which the zoo is divided, there is an opportunity to have something to eat and drink. The zoo’s entrance fee is a lot lower than most zoos in the Netherlands, and you can buy a family ticket to the zoo at a discount. For more information on opening hours, admission prices and the zoo’s various animals, check out the zoo’s Dutch-language website.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with kids #3: the islands of usedom and Rügen
It is also possible to visit an island during your vacation in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with kids. The two most famous islands of this state are Usedom and Rügen. The island of Usedom is a destination where many tourists vacation in the summer. The island has miles of beach, and many of these beaches have all the facilities that are nice for a family with kids (lifeguard, beach bars and playground equipment). Also, at most beaches the beach slopes gradually, making playing in the sea very suitable for kids as well.
There is also more to do on the island for families with kids. For example, there is a climbing forest on the island, there is a small science museum, a funny house that is upside down , there is a dino park and a small amusement park for kids. So you can see that besides visiting the beach on this island, there are plenty of other things to do for families with kids.
The other famous island of this state is the island of Rügen. This island is known for its beautiful nature and its beautiful chalk outcrops. Of course, you also have plenty of beaches with facilities here. What is very fun to do on the island of Rügen with kids is the treetop trail which is somewhat like an eagle’s nest and where you have a beautiful view of the surroundings. So you can have a great week of fun on these islands during your vacation in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with kids.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with kids #4 Boltenhagen and Warnemünde
If you want to spend a few days at the beach in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with kids during your vacation, two places are perfect for this. Boltenhagen is a seaside resort in the northern part of the state and you have a few kilometers of beach at this resort and all facilities are available at this beach for families with kids. You pay a few euros entrance fee to get on the beach, but in return you get a clean and safe beach. Another big advantage of the beach is that the seabed slopes gradually, making it a fine beach even with kids.
It is also possible at this beach to rent the famous German beach huts, so you can sit in the shade with your family even on a sunny day. There is also an opportunity to rent a SUP board here. The center of the town has plenty of restaurants and stores to grab a bite to eat or buy some food. There is also an opportunity to ride a tourist train through the village.
The second fun resort in this state is Warnemünde. Actually, this resort has the same layout as the seaside resort of Boltenhagen. Here again you have a long stretch of beach of about 3 kilometers and here too you have facilities such as renting beach chairs and the like. Along the beach on the boardwalk, you have plenty of cozy cafes and restaurants to grab some food and drinks. This place is only a ten-minute drive from Rostock, making it easy to combine, for example, with a visit to the zoo.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with kids #5 fun other activities
The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is known for its lakes and it is an ideal state for enjoying family activities. For example, at several lakes it is possible to get actively involved. For example, you have dozens of different canoe routes in the area. The area which is ideally suited for this is the Mecklenburgische Kleinseenplatte. This area is a succession of small and larger lakes connected by fords, canals, rivers and streams. You can easily rent a canoe with the family here at one of the campsites (for example, Camping-und Ferienpark Havelberge- Haveltourist).
Of course, you can swim at most lakes. There are sandy beaches at many of the lakes. Similarly, near the town of Schwerin, for example, you have the Zippendorfer beach with also a playground (in the form of a pirate ship) on the beach. Especially in summer, the place is crowded with families with kids. It is also possible to rent a SUP board at the various lakes and go out on the lake with it.
For kids who like climbing, there are of course a number of climbing parks in this state. For example, you have a Kletterwald in the aforementioned places Boltenhagen, Schwerin and Usedom. The principle of most of these parks is the same, though. You will first practice how it works with a guide, and then kids can walk a certain course at a certain height through the forest according to their age and height.
