Martinique with kids

Martinique with kids is fun! This French island in the Caribbean has plenty to offer for a great family vacation. In addition, unlike many other islands in the Caribbean, the roads, supermarkets and restaurants are very good on the island. We stayed on the island of Martinique for 10 days and had a very good time. You have beautiful beaches, you can snorkel and there are a number of other activities you can do with kids. In this blog, we list all the attractions and children’s activities on the island of Martinique.

#1 Plage de Grande Anse des Salines

Surely the most beautiful beach in Martinique is Plage de Grande Anse des Salines. This beach is quite long and does have the characteristics of a tropical beach in the Caribbean. The sand is quite white and the water beautiful blue. In addition, you will find palm trees, making it a beach you normally see on a postcard.

The sea is also very calm there, which makes it great to swim and play in the sea with kids. Because of the trees, you also have plenty of shaded areas, so you don’t have to sit full in the sun. You can park your car at the beach for free, but if you come a little later in the day it can be difficult to find parking. In fact, it is one of the most popular beaches on the island and therefore obviously crowded (at least when we visited the beach in early February).

You have Petite Anse in addition to Grande Anse. From Grande Anse, you walk to Petite Anse beach in about 10 minutes. This is a very nice beach, but it is also a nude beach…. At least there are some people walking around naked. Because of this, we ourselves did not spend very long on this beach. So you can visit two beaches in this area. At Grande Anse you have the most facilities. Here you can rent beds and there are also opportunities to eat and drink.

#2 Anse Dufour

The best place to spot turtles is at Anse Dufour beach. This beach, like Plage de Grande Anse des Salines, is located in the south of the island. You have two different beaches located at this spot: Anse Dufour and Anse Noire. At Anse Dufour, we saw several large turtles feeding in the sea quite close to the beach.

Anse Dufour is a small beach and when we were there it was very crowded. So keep in mind that the beach is quite crowded. In addition, of course, there are lots of tourists snorkeling in the sea, so especially around the turtles it can be quite crowded. At this beach it is also possible to have something to eat and drink.

Anse Noire is a few minutes’ walk from Anse Dufour and is a lot quieter than Anse Dufour. This is also because there is a lot less to see in the sea here (we saw no turtles here, but near the rocks we saw several fish). This beach is a black volcanic beach, so quite different from Anse Dufour. Our daughter here really enjoyed jumping into the water from the jetty.

#3 Plage de la Pointe Marin

Another place with great snorkeling is Plage de la Pointe Marin. A Club Med hotel is located on this beach, so most tourists stay on the part of the beach where the hotel is not located. Still, you can also visit the beach where the hotel is. It also says on hotel signs that you may walk on club Med property to visit the beach.

We snorkeled at several spots in the sea here, but the best place to spot the most fish is at the jetty of club Med (see photo below). Under the wooden bridge there are lots of different fish and also quite a bit of coral. Because it is not super deep, it is also quite possible to snorkel here with kids.

#4 Plage de Pointe Faula

We hesitated whether to include this beach in our review because we ourselves did not find this beach super. However, it does have some characteristics that do make it a truly family-friendly beach in Martinique. Plage de Pointe Faula is located in the east of Martinique and the great advantage of this beach is that the water slopes very slowly. This allows you to walk hundreds of meters into the sea and keeps the water shallow. So ideal for kids to play.

Plage de Pointe Faula is not a super big beach and we didn’t think it was a super nice beach either. However, you can park your car at the beach for free and there are quite a few nice restaurants near the beach. Therefore, you can eat and drink at this beach just fine. Most of the tourists who go to this beach walk into the sea for a bit and then lie down in the sea or it’s a kind of pool. If you are looking for a quieter beach, where kids can play in the sea just fine, then this beach is definitely a nice option.

Another beach we visited that we didn’t find super either was Plage de l’Anse Mabouyas. This is another fairly quiet beach and the water is also very calm. One drawback to this beach, however, is that there are many rocks near the beach, making it difficult to get into the sea in some places. Also, like Plage de Pointe Faula, there was quite a bit of junk from plants in the sea.

#5 Fort de France

Martinique’s largest city is Fort de France. Most tourists also arrive at this city by boat or plane. Fort de France is a large city, but the center is quite manageable. You have several stores and restaurants here, of course, and you can also go here to buy souvenirs, for example. Still, it is not a super extensive center with lots of nice stores. Therefore, don’t expect too much from shopping either.

In addition, it is fun to walk around the market for a while. You can also visit a fort with a guide. This is a large fort on the water which is partially open to tourists. A tour to this fort takes about 1.5 hours. Also, near this fort is a city beach that you can visit. Fort de France is a great activity to go to for a morning or afternoon. Then do it in the early morning or late afternoon, as it can be very hot between noon and some stores and restaurants are also closed during this time.

Other children’s activities Martinique

You do have a number of other children’s activities you can do in Martinique. These we ourselves have not done, but would like to briefly mention. We briefly list these activities below.

#6 Le Jardin de Balata: This is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world if the reviews online are to be believed. You can enjoy hiking here with the kids and you can also spot different birds here. Le Jardin de Balata is just over a fifteen-minute drive from the capital city of Fort de France, so these two Martinique attractions are great to combine.

#7 Gorges de la Falaise: If you are looking for a fun children’s activity in Martinique then this cave is a nice option. This cave is located in the northwest of the island and you can visit part of the cave only with a guide. You pay a small entrance fee and then you go down a steep descent through the jungle toward the cave. The gorge is sometimes only 2 meters wide and is very high in some places.

Eventually you come to a waterfall. You do have to go through water in the process, so be sure to put on swimwear and water shoes and put dry clothes in the car. Check beforehand that it has not rained too hard, because then the water in the gorge is too high and this cave is closed.

Family-friendly hotel Martinique

You have plenty of family-friendly accommodations in Martinique where you can spend the night. We slept in the south of the island. Our accommodation was super on a complex near the beach club Black Diamond, but we didn’t think the apartment itself was super good. We didn’t really recommend this one, so we won’t mention it here.

Still, there are plenty of family-friendly hotels in Martinique. We list some of them below.
