For example, there are several mountain bike trails, a golf course, several lakes where you can practice various water sports and a swimming pool. Best travel time Lermoos with kids
Of course, it depends a bit on what you want to do in Lermoos with kids what the best travel time is. For winter sports, the winter months in Lermoos are the most convenient months to go. This blog is really about what all you can do in Lermoos during the summer months with kids, and then the warm summer months (June-July and August) are the most suitable for exploring this area.
Just keep in mind that in summer in Austria you have both hot days and not so hot days. Often it’s still a bit chilly in the morning, but it soon warms up and the cardigan comes off. In the evening it can also cool down again and you need that cardigan again. So the weather can be very changeable in the summer, so keep that in mind when visiting this area with kids.
Transportation to and in Lermoos
Most families from Europe drive themselves to Lermoos in Austria by car. Of course, it is also possible to fly to Austria and then explore Austria in a rental car. The airport closest to Lermoos is that of Innsbruck. From Innsbruck, it is about another hour’s drive to Lermoos.
You can very easily rent a car at Innsbruck airport through the organization Sunny Cars. Sunny Cars has a very comprehensive insurance package and also a lot of fine conditions around the rental car. So look online to rent a car at Innsbruck airport through this organization.
To explore the Lermoos area with kids, it’s easy to have a car at your disposal. We had our own bikes and so we did a lot with our own bikes in the area.
Children’s activities in Lermoos
#1 Highline 179
A fun children’s activity to do in Lermoos is Highline 179. This is an incredibly high suspension bridge 114 meters high and 406 meters long. You definitely shouldn’t be afraid of heights for this, because you’re looking right down. Also, the bridge wobbles tremendously as you walk across it. In addition, you have a wonderful view from the bridge of the surrounding area.
You can choose to walk up to the bridge yourself or ride a cable car to the top. With young kids, the cable car is most suitable. At the top, kids can do another fun scavenger hunt for which they will receive a small gift afterwards. You can also visit the ruins of Ehrenberg here
The cost for a combination ticket of the cable train and this suspension bridge was €46 for our family (for 2 adults and 2 kids). You can buy these tickets at the ticket center. The suspension bridge is open 365 days a year.
#2 Panorama Freibad Lermoos
Because we were in the campground we were allowed to go to this pool for free. Panorama Freibad Lermoos is a nice and clean pool with a beautiful view there. They have 2 fun slides for the kids. You have a family slide and a red slide that swings tremendously. A paddling pool is also available for the youngest kids.
The pool is not super big, but big enough for kids to have a good time. You also have by the pool a lounging area for the parents against a steep slope.
The cost for this pool is €5.40 for adults for half a day (after 12:30 p.m.) and €4 for kids. This is obviously a fine activity in the hot summer months to spend a few hours with kids. Please note that you can only pay with cash at this pool!
#3 Tyrolean Zugspitzbahn
The Tiroler Zugspitzbahn is a modern cable car, taking you up the mountain in 10 minutes. The cable car takes you 1725 meters up the mountain. From the gondola of the cable car you have a beautiful view of the surrounding area. There are also people who hike all the way up, but that takes almost 6 hours.
Keep in mind that it can be quite chilly on the mountain, so be sure to bring a warm sweater or jacket for the kids as well. In addition, keep in mind that when it’s cloudy that you won’t see much at the summit. We were unlucky that it was cloudy at our place and therefore we were unable to see much of the view upstairs. Therefore, go on a day when the weather is nice and clear.
In winter you can ski at the top of the mountain and in summer you can go hiking with the family here. For more information about this cable car, visit the website of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn. Here you also have a webcam where you can see the condition of the mountain and whether there is much visibility. Just keep in mind that the weather can change quite quickly and so can the view of the mountain.
#4 Moosles Zauberwald hike
A fun hike you can do in the Lermoos area with kids is the Moosles Zauberwald hike. This is a fun interactive walk with 9 adventurous tasks for kids along the way. This hike is 3.9 kilometers long and you will walk a loop here. The hike is really made for children and therefore good to walk with young kids.
At these 9 stations during this walk, kids can do assignments and collect a total of 9 letters. With this, they can eventually form a word. If the kids decipher the password then they can get a medal afterwards. Kids can get this medal if they give the password at the ski elevator ticket office or at the Lermoos tourist office.
The hike is free, but you pay the cost of the gondola up the mountain.
#5 Sport- und freizeitpark Bichlbach
Another fun active activity you can do in Lermoos with kids is climbing at the climbing park at Sport- und frezeitpark Bichlbach. This is a climbing park where you can do different courses with kids. In all, you have 7 different courses here with a total of 60 different climbing elements. You can go climbing here with kids as young as 5 years old.
By the way, at the climbing forest there is also an adventure course with 16 stations that the youngest kids can use for free. This is where the youngest kids can play if they can’t yet play in the climbing forest.
In addition, you can also use the lake located at the park. You can go swimming here on hot days, so be sure to bring swimwear for the kids, too. There is also a natural rafting course for kids. Kids can then slide independently in a tire and down a river in this tire. For kids, of course, a super fun activity to do.
It is also still possible to play a game of miniature golf with the kids at this park. In addition, for the bigger kids (from 30 kg and 1.40 cm), there is Flying Fox, where they make a flight over the water via a rope 380 meters long. In short, there is plenty to do here for kids. #6 Mountain karting in Biberwier
Driving a mountain go-kart down the mountain is incredibly fun to do in the Lermoos area with kids. From a height of 145 cm, they are allowed to ride downhill independently in a mountain kart. Kids who are smaller can sit on parents’ laps and go down that way in this mountain kart.
The course is over seven kilometers long and traverses an altitude difference of 700 meters. You can also do this course with a monster roller. This is a type of scooter with thick tires. These scooters are suitable for kids 10 years and older. Kids as young as 6 years old may ride this scooter down the mountain with their parents.
#7 Wassererlebnisweg in Erwald
Another fun hike you can do with kids in this area is the one at Wassererlebnisweg in Erwald. This is a very nice trail along the water in the forest and you will encounter beautiful waterfalls along the way. In addition, you will encounter fun activities for kids on this route where they can explore and play.
It even includes a bit where you have to go through the water with your bare feet. So bringing a towel with you on this hike is helpful. This trail is 3.3 kilometers long and it took us about 2.5 hours with our kids. At the start and end of this hike is a nice patio where you can get some good food and drinks.
#8 Kletterwald Bichlbach
If your kids love climbing, the Kletterwald Bichlbach is a fun option. They have a really fun climbing wall here where kids can boulder themselves. If you as a parent have a certificate to climb then you may also climb there together. They also explain how to climb, but you have to sign up for that.
There is a cafeteria next to it so you as parents can also sit there and have a drink while the kids are climbing. This is also a great activity for kids if, for example, the weather is not great for a day in Lermoos.
Family-friendly restaurant Lermoos
You can also have great food in Lermoos with kids. You have several nice family-friendly restaurants in Lermoos.
Alpenrose: with any luck, this family-friendly restaurant in Lermoos lets them play in the hotel. The food is delicious in the restuarant with a nice wine to go with it from the wine cellar. For kids, they also have special kids’ dishes, of course.
On top of the mountains near Lermoos, you also always have nice restaurants with great views. Kids can often have fun in these restaurants’ playgrounds.
Family-friendly camping in Lermoos
We ourselves were at Lärchenhof Camping – Lermoos Zugspitz Arena. This is a very simple campground, but since we are on the road all day we don’t need anything else at the campground. The community pool was just around the corner and we could cycle there in no time. It was a steep road though so by car you could get there too.
There is also a nice park nearby with a pumptrack and playground equipment, which you can also take the kids to. Happy Camp is another family-friendly campsite in Lermoos.
