Following our visit to the beach of Katwijk aan Zee, we are writing this blog in which we want to provide you with as much information as possible.

Katwijk aan Zee with kids: general information!

We drove from The Hague, where we spent the night, to the beach at Katwijk aan Zee in just under half an hour. Katwijk aan Zee can be reached from several cities in a short time. For example, from Leiden you can be on the beach at Katwijk aan Zee in just over 15 minutes, and even from the major cities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam it takes about 40 minutes by car to arrive at the beach.

In terms of parking, things are well organized in Katwijk aan Zee. There is a large underground parking lot parallel to the beach, where lots of cars can park and where you pay a flat fee per day for parking. We found this rate to be very not too bad when you compare what you often pay per hour in certain seaside resorts.

Just keep in mind that on Sundays the stores are closed in Katwijk aan Zee. Of course, the beach tents on the beach will be open on this day.

Katwijk aan Zee with kids: the beach!

We drive up early on Sunday morning toward the beach, and once we parked the car in the underground parking lot, we started looking for a spot on the beach. The beach of Katwijk aan Zee is very clean, spacious and lovely soft sand. So in that regard, there was plenty of room to find a spot on the beach.

At several beach bars on the beach, it is possible to rent a bed with a windshield. Because it is not blowing hard on the day we visit the beach, we only rent two beach chairs. These cost a few euros a day at the various beach bars, so that’s good to do.

We also saw several kids with surfboards in the water. You have a surf school at Katwijk aan Zee, where kids can also take surf and sup lessons. Kids can master surfing skills here under the guidance of an instructor. For more information on this, check out the website of surf school Katwijk. It is also possible to kitesurf. We have not seen this on the beach, but there is a kitesurfing school in Katwijk aan Zee.

Around the beach there are also a number of playgrounds where kids can have fun. Both at the various beach tents and just stand-alone playgrounds. If the weather is less when you visit Katwijk aan Zee with kids, you can always walk a scavenger hunt through the village. Through Jola Tours , you can book a scavenger hunt that takes about 1.5 hours.

If you would like to visit a museum during your visit to Katwijk aan Zee with kids, the Katwijk Museum and the Railway Museum are options. However, these are small museums, where you won’t have an entire day’s entertainment. These are options, though, if, for example, the weather is not so good and a whole day to the beach is too long.

Katwijk aan Zee with kids: food and drink!

You have plenty of options in Katwijk aan Zee for good food and drink. The first thing we noticed was that almost everyone (like us) on the beach carried a cooler, with food and drinks in it. Still, there is no need to bring your own food and drinks, as there are plenty of nice beach bars where you can sit down and enjoy good food and drinks.

We ourselves had some food and drinks at the SandCbar, which also had a small playground out front and where Sophie had another great time playing while we enjoyed a snack and a drink. Because the village is attached to the beach, you can also walk right into the village from the beach and there are many more restaurants and snack bars where you can eat and drink.

Katwijk aan Zee with kids: conclusion!

We had a wonderful day at the beach in Katwijk aan Zee. When we were there it was about 25 degrees and there was little wind on the beach. This made it very pleasant and we were able to enjoy ourselves all day. The sea (we were there in the month of July) was chilly, but we still swam in the sea a few times that day.

Because we had rented beach chairs, had our cooler with us and our daughter played nicely with her shovel and her scoop net, we really had a top day. In that regard, it is a good option if you are considering a day at the beach in the Netherlands.
