Last vacation we visited the beautiful province of Friesland with our 9-year-old daughter and entertained ourselves for a whole week in several towns of Friesland. We also wrote the blog Friesland with kids as a result of this visit, in which we listed all the children’s activities in the province. During this cool vacation, we also spend one night in the town of Grou at Hotel Restaurant Oostergoo and as a result of this overnight stay, we write this extensive review about this hotel.
General information hotel
The hotel is beautifully situated on the waterfront in the village of Grou. We arrived here only towards the end of the afternoon and were able to park the car for free in the little square near the hotel. There are also some parking spaces in front of the hotel. A 20-minute walk away is also P+R Reinerswei. You can then take bus 28 which will drop you off near the hotel (Parkstraat stop, this is about another 5-minute walk to the hotel).
You can also arrive at the hotel by boat. The hotel is on the water, so you can moor your boat at the hotel. The village of Grou is definitely fun to walk through with kids. You have several nice stores, restaurants and cafes to visit here.
The room
We had booked the family room with the hotel and this family room can accommodate 4 people. As parents, we had a box-spring bed and there were two more separate beds in a separate area, one of which was for our daughter. We were on the top floor and had a beautiful view of Grou from our window.
In the corner of the room was a desk with a chair and, of course, there was a bathroom in the room with toilet, shower and sink. We had an excellent WIFI connection in the room which is always very convenient with kids too. In short, a very nice family room, where we spent a wonderful night.
Food and drink
At the hotel there is a restaurant where you can go for a snack and a drink. We did not dine here in the evening, as we had already eaten in Leeuwarden, but had a lovely drink on the restaurant’s terrace by the water. Here we really enjoyed the beautiful sunset you could see from the terrace.
The restaurant offers very good food for both lunch and dinner, and the restaurant looks very attractive from the inside. In the morning we did take advantage of breakfast and it was very good. What we found a very nice system about the breakfast is that you indicate on a list in advance what all you want to eat.
This also avoids putting unnecessary products on the table that you as a family are not going to eat anyway (we are vegetarian, but breakfast often includes meat, for example) and you really get a breakfast tailored to your needs. This breakfast was very tasty with all kinds of delicious products. We therefore found the breakfast to be highly recommended.
Halloween
We stayed overnight at the hotel coincidentally on the night that Halloween was celebrated in the village of Grou, and so we were able to sign up to join the Halloween parade through the village. This also started at hotel restaurant Oostergoo and we went in groups of about 20 people to different places in the village to get spooked.
This tour was free and we really enjoyed it. Super nice people all in our group and our daughter absolutely loved the horror tour (and a little scary too ;)).
Conclusion
We really enjoyed our overnight stay at Hotel Restaurant Oostergoo in Grou. Beautifully situated on the waterfront, the hotel offers spacious family rooms for families of 4. In addition, you can enjoy delicious food and drinks in the restaurant at the hotel.
