During our week-long vacation in the province of Friesland, we had a great time for a week with our daughter. We visited Friesland in the autumn vacations and were lucky enough to have beautiful weather. We wrote the blog Friesland with kids as a result of this vacation, in which we listed all the children’s activities of this province. We visited several Frisian cities during this vacation and one of these cities was the beautiful Dokkum. In Dokkum we spent the night at Hotel Abdij Dokkum and in this blog we give an extensive review about our findings of this hotel.
General information hotel
Hotel Abdij Dokkum is located right in the center of Dokkum. It is in a beautiful historic building and this property is located on a square. From the hotel you can be in Dokkum’s shopping center in a few minutes’ walk. You can park your car paid at the hotel, but a few minutes walk from the center you have a free parking garage (parking garage ‘t Panwurk). Here is also a large supermarket if you want to get some more.
This hotel (a former orphanage) looks beautiful inside and you have nice cozy corners all over the hotel where you can sit. It’s really very atmospheric. In addition, it smells tremendously good everywhere in the hotel. There are scented sticks in the various rooms, making it smell wonderful throughout this hotel. We therefore found it a very nice place to spend the night with our family.
The room
We had booked the family suite at the hotel. This suite is 35m2 and is suitable for families with 5 people. We had a nice box spring bed and our daughter slept in the bunk bed, which consisted of no less than 3 beds. Our daughter absolutely loved this. This family room also had a kitchenette without cooking facilities and a luxurious bathroom with rain shower.
In addition, the room was fully equipped. Thus, it had a flat-screen TV, a functioning WIFI connection, a safe and a refrigerator. The bathroom featured Marie Stella Maris brand grooming products, which all add to the luxurious feeling you have here in this room.
Also, the family room had a sitting area, making the room nice and spacious, and it also had a small area outside where you can sit outside privately. In addition, next to the room is a nice sitting area, where you can also have a drink in front of this family room. We found it a really nice room and enjoyed relaxing here.

Food and drink at the hotel
The hotel also has a café area. where you can grab a bite to eat or a drink. At this café we had both breakfast and dinner. Dinner was a 3-course shared dining menu, with several options to choose from. We chose the vegetarian surprise menu here. This was really super tasty and definitely fun to do with our 9-year-old daughter.
Here you share different snacks with the family and this way kids can also (learn to) eat different things. The café is very tastefully decorated, so you can really have a pleasant evening here with the family. We dined here all evening.
We also took advantage of the restaurant’s breakfast in the morning. This was also very extensive (buffet) and you besides the buffet also ordered from all kinds of egg dishes made by the kitchen. We also had this breakfast in the café. So in that respect, you don’t have to leave the hotel at all to enjoy good food and drink.
Conclusion
We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Abdij Dokkum. The hotel is right in the center and you can park your car for free within walking distance. The hotel is very tastefully decorated and has beautiful rooms that are suitable for families with kids. In addition, you can enjoy delicious food and drinks.
