Table of contents
If you come to the Efteling for the first time, one day on a busy day is not enough to see everything. Fortunately, in recent years there have been plenty of lodging options added near the theme park, so you can even make it a weekend at Efteling with kids. We list all the information about this amusement park in this blog, so you can get a good idea of what to expect at the amusement park!
The Efteling with kids: general information
Efteling is located in Kaatsheuvel in the province of North Brabant. Most families come to the amusement park by car, and there are plenty of parking spaces around the amusement park.
Make sure if you are going for a full day that you are on time so you can park close to the amusement park. The later you arrive in the day, the further you have to walk from your car to the theme park entrance. In any case, do not park it in the area around the amusement park to save money, because they check very strictly on that and then the chances of getting a ticket are quite high.
The Efteling is open year-round and has various events throughout the seasons. For example, in the summer you have the Efteling’s summer nights, when the park is open longer and various artists come to perform.
In winter, the amusement park is in winter spheres and we always find that a very nice time to visit the amusement park. You will see winter details everywhere in the amusement park, there are fireplaces, kids can skate on an ice rink and there will be Christmas trees everywhere. In autumn, the park is most colorful because there is quite a lot of nature in the amusement park.
The Efteling has several ticket promotions throughout the year. There are occasional amusement park discount offers at Albert Heijn, for example. This can save quite a bit of money if you plan to visit the amusement park with the whole family. You can rent a stroller at the amusement park for a reduced fee, so you don’t have to leave your own (expensive) baby carriage unattended at the various attractions. Look here for ticket promotions on the park’s own website.
The Efteling with kids: apps and boarding pass
The Efteling has several apps you can use during your visit to the theme park. For example, there is the Efteling app, which allows you to have your tickets scanned, gives you a map of the park including show and attraction wait times and additional information about various attractions.
There is also an Efeling Kids app, where kids can play games, read books and watch videos about the park. There are also several home apps where you can play different games. If you stay overnight in vacation park Efteling Bosrijk then there is an app, which allows you to do a kind of scavenger hunt in the forest and look for the lost sleeping sand.
Recently, the Efteling also started working with a kind of fastpass. At the Python attraction, it is possible to use the Efteling app to reserve a time slot (boarding pass) for a group of up to 6 people, which allows you to wait a maximum of only 15 minutes at this attraction. Currently, this is still the only attraction for which this applies.
For a list of all the Efteling apps you can download, take a look at the theme park’s website.
The Efteling with kids: attractions!
You can visit more than 30 different attractions at the Efteling with kids. You have attractions for both young and older kids. Some attractions have a length restriction. We discuss the most important ones below.
Steam train: to get a good impression of the park, you can take the steam train that runs throughout the amusement park. Also, this is a way to quickly get from one place to another in the park.
Fabula: this is one of the newest attraction as a replacement for the Pandadrome. This 4D film is about a squirrel who has all kinds of adventures. And during the film, you will experience 4D effects such as water, smell and wind.
Max & Moritz: this is a children’s roller coaster, where kids as small as 1 meter can enter. You can choose from two jobs here. Max’s and Moritz’s.
Symbolica: This attraction is also inside and one of the newer attractions you can visit at the Efteling with kids. There are several routes you can take in this attraction, so if you want to see the entire attraction in its entirety, you have to visit the attraction three times and choose a different route each time.
Joris and the Dragon: this is a wooden roller coaster, where two carts hold a race against each other. You can choose between fire and water here. Kids must be at least 110 cm tall here, and the attraction goes harder than you think.
Baron1898: This is a fairly new attraction and one of the most spectacular roller coasters you can do at the Efteling with kids. This attraction is also subject to the highest length restriction. Kids must be at least 132 cm. You make a 37.5-meter drop down here and then go over the top several times.
Dreamflight: a beautiful indoor attraction in which you ride in a cart through a forest of fairies and trolls. At this attraction, wait times can be quite long. Keep an eye on the app to see when the queue is short.
The Flying Dutchman: This attraction starts inside and ends with a sort of splash outside. Kids as young as 120 cm are allowed in this attraction. Inside the castle, it all looks beautiful. Other than that, the attraction is not super spectacular.
Piranha: in the piranha you go in a round boat through a 350-meter whitewater course and the question is always who gets soaking wet in the boat. You can spin the boat around so that the person next to you will be just under that waterfall or get a wave of water over them.
Our daughter finds it a terrible attraction (unlike her parents) and always wants to go in only with a poncho. Keep in mind that if you visit the Efteling with kids in winter, don’t go in here first, as there’s a chance you’ll be walking around with wet clothes for a few hours, which can be quite cold.
The Python: this is also one of the most famous attractions in the amusement park. Kids must be at least 120 cm tall for this attraction. The roller coaster makes two loopings and goes through a corkscrew. It is one of the most spectacular attractions at the Efteling with kids.
Carnival Festival: If you go to the Efteling with kids you can’t skip this classic. Young kids especially enjoy the Carnival Festival. You go under the guidance of the characters Jokie and Jet to all kinds of countries around the world.
Fata Morgana: This is a classic at the Efteling and it existed when we ourselves were young. This indoor attraction takes you in a boat to an Oriental world. For small kids, this attraction can still be quite scary, as there is shooting, crocodiles in the water and magicians popping up everywhere. Yet even the very youngest kids accompanied by a parent are allowed in here.
Vogel Rok: this indoor roller coaster allows kids as young as 120 cm. Large parts of the roller coaster is in the dark and you actually take flight from your cart from the talons of a large bird of prey.
Villa Volta: This is an indoor attraction. You actually come to this attraction in two spaces. In the first space a story is told and in the second space the action really begins. You sit in sofas facing each other in a house, looking like you’re going over the top. This is not so, since you only rock up and down a bit, but because the walls rotate it does give this effect.
Anton Pieck Square: at this square you can ride the carousel and merry-go-round with kids at the Efteling. The atmosphere the square should exude is of an old village square. You also have several restaurants here where you can get something to eat.
Swing Ship: the famous swing ship is for kids and parents with strong stomachs. Unlike a lot of other amusement parks, this big swing ship at the Efteling lets kids of all heights get in. However, kids under 120 cm must be accompanied by an adult. So our daughter went into this ship at a very young age. You can choose whether you want to sit in the middle or on the outside where you go a lot higher.
People of Laaf: this is actually a kind of village in the amusement park. The People of Laaf are funny little figures and you can go to different cottages to see where the laafs fish, bake bread or sit and write. You can also ride a snail down a track a few meters high through the village here. This village is especially fun for small kids. You also have some slides here and a staircase that makes weird noises.
Pagoda: If you want a nice view of the Efteling amusement park with kids, this is a good attraction to visit. It is a Thai temple that spins at a height of 45 meters, giving you a beautiful 360-degree view of the surroundings.
Besides all these big rides, the amusement park also has some smaller attractions such as spinning cooking pots, pedal trains, boats that sail a set route across the water, a maze, a haunted castle, a playground, an Efteling museum, a miniature world and a paid play gallery.
To keep the park tidy, they came up with a clever construction at the amusement park. In several places in the amusement park you have a Hollow Bolle Gijs standing, asking for garbage. If you throw something into the mouth of Hollow Bolle Gijs, he says thank you. Kids, of course, love this and want to put as much trash as possible in Hollow Bolle Gijs’ mouth. This in turn will also reduce the amount of trash on the streets in the park.
The Efteling with kids: the fairytale forest
A visit to the Efteling with kids is not complete until you have visited the fairytale forest. A great advantage of the fairy tale forest is that you can just walk around past the different fairy tales and not have to stand in line with young kids.
The fairy tale forest is quite extensive and you will also find the famous Efteling characters like Lange Jan, the Boze Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood, the Giant and Tom Thumb, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, Rumpelsteeltje, Frau Holle, Ezeltje Strekje, the Fairy Tale Tree, the Dragon and so we can list many more famous characters from the fairy tale forest.
There are more than thirty different fairy tales in this forest, and you will spend some time here with small kids visiting all of them. With some of the fairy tales, a story is told and with other fairy tales you can mostly watch. Once we are in the fairy tale forest with our daughter we just let her go and follow her from fairy tale to fairy tale. In the fairytale forest, you will also find several mushrooms that have music coming out of them. Kids always find this very interesting.
The Efteling with kids: shows
You can take kids to several shows at the Efteling in the park. So you have the spectacular show of Raveleijn. This show is all about knights having entire battles with horses in an arena. The show lasts about 12 minutes and is quite spectacular.
Aquanura is a fountain show and it is often held near the park entrance at the end of the day. The lake features as many as 200 fountains and 900 different lights, which go up and down to Efteling music. This show also lasts about 12 minutes. For this show, you don’t have to stand in line, just find a spot around the big lake.
The fairy tree show has really been our daughter’s favorite for several years. In the fairytale forest is a small open-air theater where the show is held every so often. Actors here reenact a fairy tale with the familiar fairy tree puppets. There is dancing and the kids are involved in the show. As far as we are concerned, we really recommend the Efteling with kids who are young.
Furthermore, there are various fairy tale characters walking around the park (especially at the entrance) and there are sometimes smaller shows somewhere on the streets of the amusement park.
The Efteling with kids: food and drink!
Of course, there are plenty of places to eat and drink at the Efteling with kids. Throughout the park there are tents where you can get something, and more and more have been added in recent years. Thus, there is something tasty for everyone. From Oriental meals to just poffertjes or fries. It is available somewhere. It is even possible to eat an entire three-course meal with the family at The Weapon of Raveleijn in the amusement park these days.
One of the most popular restaurants in the amusement park is Polles Kitchen Pancake Restaurant. Of course, most kids like a pancake but the inside of the restaurant also looks very cool in the style of the People of Laaf. For kids, there is a lot to see here. However, there is often a line at the restaurant, so it is recommended to make reservations at the beginning of the day, for example, for later in the day. A great end to your visit to the Efteling with kids!
Check in advance which restaurants are all available at the amusement park, so you don’t have to search for a specific restaurant at the amusement park itself that serves, say, pizza or rice. You can find a list of theme park restaurants here.
By the way, at the Efteling you are allowed to bring your own food and drink. Especially if you have a season ticket, for example, it would be pricey to eat in the eateries every time. Most families therefore carry a large backpack filled with the necessary food and drink.
