Dierenrijk with kids: review of this zoo!

Visiting Dierenrijk with kids is fun! This zoo in Mierlo is less than a 15-minute drive from downtown Eindhoven, so we visited this zoo during a city trip to Eindhoven. We previously wrote about this family-friendly city the blog Eindhoven with kids, in which we listed all the fun activities to do with kids. Following our visit to Dierenrijk, we write this comprehensive review of this zoo.

Dierenrijk with kids: general information

So on Saturday morning we drive toward the zoo. We parked the car in the (paid) parking lot in front of the zoo and so we were in front of the zoo entrance within two minutes. Here we see the first animals of the day right away. The zoo is open 365 days a year, and you can easily order tickets to the zoo through the zoo’ s website.

At the entrance, we are immediately given a map of the zoo, and this map also shows the zoo’s daily schedule. This lists the feeding times of several animals. Our daughter always enjoys using a map with a pen to tick off the animals she has seen at the zoo, so we always think a map like this is totally awesome! In addition, to orient yourself in the zoo is also very nice, of course.

For families with very young kids, there are plenty of facilities at the zoo. For example, you have changing tables for families with young kids both in the restroom at the reception and in the restroom at snack point De Halte. In Restaurant Smulrijk and at Snack Point The Halte, there is also an opportunity to warm a bottle of baby food.

Dierenrijk with kids: the park

The zoo is a combination of lots of fun and animal viewing. What strikes us right away about the zoo is that they have quite a few large animals such as the elephant, the rhino, the tiger, the camel, the brown bear, the lion, the polar bear, and I’m sure we’re missing some large animals. In total, the zoo has 64 different species of animals that you can view at the zoo.

What we really liked is the section near the ring-tailed lemurs. You can walk among these monkeys here and the monkeys are not afraid to get close either. Our daughter really enjoyed being able to get so close to these monkeys. In addition, our daughter absolutely loved the Garra Rufa fish that eat the dead skin cells off your hands. Here we spent a fair amount of time.

In addition, kids can play in many places at the zoo. Upon entering the zoo at the entrance there is a large playground right away, and you also have play objects for kids in numerous other places. Always a nice change for kids. There is also a large indoor playground at the zoo. Ideal for when the weather is a bit off. When we visited the zoo, it had rained quite a bit the previous day and many of the play equipment was wet, otherwise we would have stayed at these play equipment much longer.

Dierenrijk with kids: food and drink

You can also have great food and drink at Dierenrijk with kids. There are catering establishments in several areas of the zoo. We ourselves had lunch at Smulrijk restaurant. Here you could order sandwiches, sandwiches or soup, as well as entire hamburger menus.

The restaurant also has several vegetarian options. You can also mention this to the restaurant and they will take this into account (for example, a healthy sandwich without ham). The zoo also has picnic tables where you can also have food and drinks you brought from home. Plenty of choice!

Dierenrijk with kids: conclusion

We had a great day at Dierenrijk with our daughter. We were surprised how many animals we could admire and how many different pieces of playground equipment there were throughout the zoo. We spent about half a day at the zoo now, but we imagine that in the summer months (we visited the zoo ourselves in November) you can spend even longer in the various playgrounds with your kids and have a whole day here. For more information on opening hours, entrance tickets and the different animals, take a look at the Dierenrijk Mierlo website.
