Hoek van Holland with kids: family-friendly beach!

When we took a city trip to the city of Rotterdam last weekend, the weather was quite warm, making it an ideal day to go to the beach. One of the beaches closest to the city of Rotterdam is the beach at Hoek van Holland. Following our visit to this family-friendly beach, we list all the information important for a day out to Hoek van Holland beach with kids.

Hoek van Holland with kids: general information!

We drove from Rotterdam (where we spent the night) to the beach at Hoek van Holland in just under half an hour. Near the beach is a huge parking lot, where you can park your car for free. As far as we are concerned, a great advantage. which means a day at the beach does not have to be very expensive right away, if only because of the high parking costs at many beaches.

It is also possible to take the subway from Rotterdam to Hoek van Holland beach. You then first take the train from Rotterdam to Schiedam and then it’s another half hour by metro. In less than an hour you can be on the beach from Rotterdam. By the way, near the beach, the ferry to England also sails.

Hoek van Holland with kids: the beach

The biggest reason families visit Hoek van Holland with kids is because of the beach. We were positive about this beach, though. This beach is clean and expansive, and there is plenty of room to not lay hut to hut. When we were there on a Saturday morning with a temperature of 22 degrees, it was not really super crowded. However, there was a decent wind, so it did feel chilly at times.

You can see the bustle of the harbor in the background of the beach, and you can see large boats going back and forth. The beach is a great place to look for beautiful shells and we saw several kids with landing nets looking for fish left in the pools when the tide went out.

We also saw several people in the water with surfboards. In fact, at the Hoek van Holland beach there is also a surf school and shop, where you can rent gear and take surf lessons. You can rent surfboards and SUP boards by the hour, and it is also possible to rent a wetsuit. This is desirable in the Netherlands anyway, since the water can still be on the cold side. You can book lessons for surfing and supping separately for your kids, or for the whole family! For more information, check out the provider’s website.

Hoek van Holland with kids: food and drink

What struck us most when we visited the beach at Hoek van Holland were the many beach clubs present at the beach. In total, there are about ten different beach clubs sitting side by side on the beach and one beach club is more beautiful than the other. So, of course, you can have some great food and drink here.

In addition, there are plenty of play opportunities for kids. For example, at one of the beach clubs you have a large inflatable pool in the middle of the beach club, there was a large bouncy castle at another beach club, and you also have two or three smaller playgrounds for the kids. In that respect, you can have a great time for a whole day here on the beach at Hoek van Holland with kids.

If you do not want to eat too expensive with kids, it is also possible to eat something at the local French fry shop on the beach. Of course, we also saw plenty of families who had brought a cooler from home. This is obviously the most budget-friendly way to spend a day at the beach.

Hook of Holland with kids: Conclusion

We were really positively surprised by the beach at Hoek van Holland. We actually expected it not to be much, but apart from being a very pleasant beach, there are also plenty of facilities to enjoy a whole day there with the family. In particular, the large number of beach clubs located on the beach makes Hoek van Holland beach extremely suitable to go to with kids. Kids can go to the restroom here just fine, there are plenty of play opportunities, and you can provide yourself with snacks and drinks in a very nice and luxurious way!

Hoek van Holland with kids: where to stay?

Of course, you can perfectly combine a day at the beach in Hoek van Holland with a city trip to Rotterdam. There is enough to do in the city to keep you entertained for at least a week. We ourselves have slept in the city several times in different accommodations and we list below some of our recommendations in the city for families with kids:

Hostel Room Rotterdam: very nice hostel, where there is a relaxed atmosphere. The hostel also has a family room for families.

SS Rotterdam: this hotel is a sight in itself. You sleep on an old cruise ship, and there is plenty to do on the ship itself. We really enjoyed spending a night here.

Hotel The James Rotterdam: this is a luxury hotel right in the center of Rotterdam. We found this hotel very welcoming and also rented bikes here at the hotel.

Urban Residences: one of the nicest apartments we ever slept in was from this organization. They have beautiful apartments right in the center, where there really is everything. We thought this was a super nice experience to spend a night here in all that luxury.
