City Hotel Groningen: tremendous hospitality in the city center
The first time we visited the city of Groningen, we slept at the City Hotel Groningen right in the city center. We wanted a downtown hotel, and when we saw that this hotel is a five-minute walk from the Grand Place, we went to explore further. When it turned out that it was possible to book a deluxe room with a bath with our daughter, we knew which hotel we wanted to stay at: the City Hotel Groningen! As a result of our overnight stay at this hotel, we are writing this comprehensive review.

Even though the hotel is in the middle of downtown, there is excellent parking near the hotel. In fact, the hotel has its own parking garage (paid parking) a few minutes’ walk away from the hotel. On that note, before we knew it, we were at the hotel reception desk. What struck us right away was the hospitality of the staff. Everyone in the hotel makes you feel welcome and that is tremendously nice to feel.
It’s often those little things like when you are at the front desk that the general manager of the hotel comes to check if everything is to your liking or that the front desk of the hotel prints out a scavenger hunt for kids through the city for you. Little things like this made us feel extremely welcome at the hotel.
Downstairs at the reception is also cozy bar, where you can have a drink and play a game with your kids, for example. Later when we went to write this review and studied the hotel’s website more closely, it turns out that there is also a private sauna and Turkish bath at the hotel. We have not taken advantage of this, but it seems wonderful after a day of walking around the city to take advantage of this with the family!
The room in the hotel
We booked with the hotel the Executive room for up to three people of 24 square meters in size. What we really liked about the room apart from the luxurious decor is that there was a bathtub in the room. And not just any bath, but a bubble bath! Our family likes to have a nice bath, so the fact that there was a hot tub in the room was really a big plus for us. In addition to the bathtub, there is also a separate shower in the bathroom.
We don’t have a bubble bath at home, so for a while we didn’t realize when you put the bath foam in the tub and then turn on the bubbles, that in no time you have a bath with a huge amount of bath foam ;).
Furthermore, the room had all the necessities you want from a room when you book an overnight stay in a hotel. So you have a free WIFI connection in the room, there is a refrigerator to put some drinks cold, there is a Nespresso machine available, a safe and a flat-screen TV. This combined with the box-spring beds allows you to fully relax in the room.
Food and drink in hotel
As we mentioned earlier, the hotel has a bar downstairs at the reception where you can have a drink with your kids and play a game. For dinner, the hotel collaborates with local restaurants in Groningen. So there were all kinds of menus at the reception that we could order from, so we could eat it in a special room at the hotel. A super creative solution in times of all the corona measures. This really made it seem like we were eating out at the hotel.
What is also very nice is to have a drink at the hotel on the rooftop terrace. On the top floor of the hotel, they have a number of tables and chairs where you can have a drink and have a nice view of the Martini Tower! Especially in the summer when the sun shines brightly, this really seems like a super place to sit.
In the morning we also took advantage of the hotel’s breakfast and it was very tasty. Actually all the things you expect from a breakfast were present at the hotel. We therefore left the hotel with a well-filled stomach.
We really enjoyed our overnight stay at this hotel! Located in the middle of the city, the hotel has luxurious rooms where you can completely unwind after a day of strolling through the city. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, which makes you feel very welcome with your family. Only disadvantage of the hotel is that it is not possible to book a room for larger families than three people, but for families of three, the hotel is definitely recommended when visiting the city of Groningen with your family!
If you want more information about the rooms, the facilities and what events are happening nearby, check out the hotel’s website.
